Why do people build houses this big and this expensive of a house (certainly not a home), only to put it on the market?

I have serious problems with people who build houses over 10,000 sq ft, 15,000 is okay on occasion, but 48,000 is excessive and unnecessary and not even a display of wealth, but of waste.

If they are going build a spec house of that magnitude, at least make it appeal to a mass liking, instead of a very specific buyer, there are only a handful of people in the world who can afford a 58 million dollar house.

I could go on, but I think people will get the point.

You may have missed that this guy is a Developer, and that is exactly what they do. He probably built the thing for near or even under $50million, now he just waits a couple years until someone buys it and he gains ~$8,000,000 gross profit.

I do agree here, it is very excessive and wasteful. for ~$50,000,000, he could Develop a condo building somewhere near a city and have compact, efficient, but luxurious units and still make a similar profit margin.

You contradict yourself talking about appealing to the masses, yet only a select few would have the money to purchase this. I think that someone with alot of money would actually want something very different with a list of amenities that no other home around can boast. This home will sell, but it may take a couple years to do it.

this is actually a friend of mines house, i was over there a few weeks ago, its completely over the top and this is their 2nd insanely massive house in LA, the first one is in Bel Air and its about 70,000 sq/ft. This house is super modern and pretty cool. Heres some pics from my iPhone when i was over there a couple weeks ago.

well then, I don't like when builders build houses just for the sake of making them 58 mil. There is no taste behind this house, I feel that if a person wants to have/own/live in a house of that magnitude then he/she should make it themselves to their exact specifications. some aspects of the house are pretty but some are just contrived and look pretty barren and not "homey" at all.

Not a fan of that house at all. It doesn't bother me if people build 50,000 square feet homes but don't pretend you'd actually want to live in a house like that. Look at that kitchen and indoor pool, terrible!

Mohammed, the architect, (and his family, who i am friends with) actually are going to live in the house until it gets sold. I was at their other house a couple weeks ago and they seem to be packing up the things that they need, and are going to move to the other house until it gets sold. Since his houses are so expensive, it usually takes a while to find a buyer, so he and his family usually move into the houses until they are sold. The house looks much better and less gaudy in person than it does in the pictures. It is actually very elegantly done (except for the Moroccan bath in the pictures, which are in all his houses, and the wood on the hand rails) but the pictures don't do it any justice, they just try to overwhelm you with its coolness and make it look really expensive. The house also doesn't feel really big in any room except the kitchen, it just seems that every door you go in, there is another wing. The house that he is currently living in feels like a hotel, and includes a full ball room and something like 30 bathrooms and 20 bedrooms. Heres some pics of other parts of the house to show you what i mean.

If he would take $57 million, Id jump on it.

I dont have a problem with the size, or the price or anything else anyone wants to do to a home with their own money. Would I ever buy it? Nope. Houses like that just feel so cold and empty.

I like it. And I don't mind it when people build houses this big. What people do with their money is their business.

I wouldn't buy it though. Cool to look at though.

My god did you guys notice the lawn? It's lush and has great color, perfectly matched to its exposure; nothing like a standard bluegrass all around; and in this heat? The landscaper knows his grass and the crew must be doin something right I'm sure you guys noticed but damn.
