what the heck kinda question or thread is this? Why would we group buy walkie talkies? I had them and used them a lot as a kid through high school for man hunt, capture the flag and so on with teams but nothing else. I loved them. I have no use for them now
For all the haters I hope you get lost and ticketed lol... Stig had a good idea buying a set between two teams and splitting the cost. Good for catching up with the pack and early warnings on police
I'm cool with walkies, so long as no one takes my call sign. So, in case you're wondering, Buttercock is already taken. I also have "Slidin' right in" trademarked. Buttercock, over and out.
we use walks for a lot of east coast rallies. good way to signal ahead for cops and jams. we will have them this year. Oh and they are good for trash talk haha
To be honest I've never used walkies, ever. Can different brands/models still communicate with each other?
I definitely don't think it'll hurt to have a set, and they may actually prove beneficial for a few reasons. At the very least they should provide a laugh or two.
I use to have 2 police issue walkie talkies. They had a 3 mile range and went thru all types of buildings and settings. We used them on road trips with other friends. They costed about 1000 for both but they worked great.
Here I am looking at a 35mile (clean sight for that range) by Motorola for $50. Good reviews as well.
Motorola Talkabout MR350R FRS/GMRS 22-channel Two-way radio
They were probably Motorola Saber encrypting radios. And good luck getting 35 miles out of a FRS/GMRS radio. You will be lucky to exceed a couple miles. The Sabers are 6 watts, and the ones you are looking at are .5/1.5 watts.
I feel that in the real-world you'll only get 10-30% of the advertised range. I believe the range that they provide is assuming a big open field with no interference. So the walkie that advertises a 20 mile range, likely will only give you 1-2 miles out on the road - Which really is all you need.
I use walkies a lot at my car festival work - and we've come to learn that you should not go for price>quality. We got some sh*tty cheap ones one meet, and they didn't work at all, so we've been using Motorola ever since. Unsure of the specific model, but they do look very similar to HT1000's, and they are absolutely fantastic - very long battery life, the range is great and it penetrates through any building.
Yeah, I really do like my Motorola 2-ways. I do get 2 miles in the city and up to 5 on the highway. I was going to mention the battery life as a positive as well. I've never had the 2-way's chargeable battery die with 8hrs of use. You can also supplement the radio's battery with disposable batteries - I also have a car charger just in case.
On a side note, the higher-end 2 way radio will have more channels for secret communication. Skipping getting in to radio frequencies, the lower channels can be heard by most people whether they're on the channel you're using or not. Not with 2-ways but government issued hand held radios - the people you'd be trying to avoid in the first place.
Don't worry so much about radar, because just about every time it will be lidar; especially, in the areas that the rally is going through. 2-ways will help as long as everyone is in range but the best information comes from a CB.
While I wonder why using smoke signals has not been discussed, I do have to say that my radar detector & laser shifter has saved my ass more than a few times.
Just talking out of my ass with the smoke signal comment. And I personally can't stand the V1. Had mine for ~ 2 days then tossed it in a drawer in the garage in favor of my Escort 9500xi.
Uniden. However, most municipalities are on digital encrypted systems. Scanners are useless for the new systems.
