Default Dubai - Anything worth doing on a layover?

So it currently looks like I am going to have a 12 hour layover in Dubai soon, getting in at 1.30pm and leaving at 2am (I can only assume that's local time anyway). Even after allowing a few hours for delays/checkins etc that still works out to be a long time, I have heard there's decent shopping in the airport- Didn't even pay attention last time, went straight through to my connecting flight. I am not sure on whether I need a visa or anything to leave the airport but I will work that out when I get to it.

My question is: Is there anything worth doing in that time frame? taking into account time of day as well as period. I won't be dressed fancy, will be in my t-shirt (possibly haggard jumper) and track pants and lugging around a backpack if that makes a difference. I also haven't shaved in a month and I now have a neckbeard, also my beard is getting out of control - I look like a hobo. Don't judge me, my final flight is like 13 hours...

You guys are boring. Turns out I had some unexpected company so I didn't leave the airport, just had a few burgers and smoked a cigar or two in the smoking room and checked out the impressive range of duty-free watches etc. I did find out (I believe anyway) That for most countries you didn't need a visa to leave the airport as far as I could tell. Next time I will have to remember to up my credit limit before I go so I can get a new watch or something, I might even attempt to go outside...
