One of our previous week’s Would You Rather saw the BAC Mono triumph over the Ariel Atom in a scrap of bantamweight track-day cars, but this week we’re turning to something more civilized. Now is a good time to be alive if you’re in the market for an obscenely fast grand touring car, and they don’t come any better than the Jaguar F Type Coupe R and Mercedes-AMG GT S.

Both cars use a similar formula - classic proportions combined with thoroughly modern looks and 500-plus-horsepower V8s that roar, pop and bang and generally sound fantastic. On paper, they look pretty similar, but let’s dig a bit deeper to figure out which car you should put in your garage.

LOOKS: The days of conservatively styled Jaguars are long gone. The F-Type isn’t just the best looking Jaguar on sale right now, it might be the best looking car on sale, period.

LOOKS: The AMG-GT is completely unique in Mercedes' range, meaning no one will mistake for a lesser car. The long hood and sleek profile don’t hurt either.

LOOKS: Even though it’s slightly more familiar at this point, the Jag just looks right.

PERFORMANCE: The Jaguar takes its ultimate form as the the F-Type R. Its 5.0-liter supercharged V8 produces 550-hp. The sprint to 60 mph comes in 3.9 seconds and it tops out at 186 mph.

PERFORMANCE: With its turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 the GT’s engine is a little more with-the-times and produces 503-hp in ‘S’ specification. It’s good enough to shove the GT to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 193 mph.

PERFORMANCE: Despite being less powerful, the Merc’s lighter curb weight and broader torque band give it the advantage.

INTERIOR: The F-Type’s interior is as sporty as it is luxurious and the standard panoramic glass roof gives it an airy ambiance.

INTERIOR: The AMG GT’s interior is a very special place to be, and Mercedes-AMG has reputation for making some of the best seats in the business.

INTERIOR: This is close, but the AMG GT’s bespoke interior and outstanding seats earn it another point.

EXCLUSIVITY: As suggested earlier, the F-Type can be had as a coupe or convertible and with a variety of engine options. In our humble opinion, the F-Type R coupe is the one to have, but you can’t go wrong with any of them.

EXCLUSIVITY: As the successor to the SLS, the GT is exclusive to the Mercedes’ AMG division. It looks, feels and is exclusive.

EXCLUSIVITY: The AMG GT simply feels more special, which makes it the winner of this week’s L4P battle.
