Last time we saw the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio take an upset victory over the BMW M3 in a battle of two very fast sedans , but plenty of you let us know on our facebook page that of you would rather put the M3 in your garages. The Bimmer was outperformed by almost every metric, but clearly there’s still plenty to like about what has been the go-to sport sedan for decades.

You might have heard about an exciting new car from a very old car company called Ford. We’re of course not talking about the long-awaited return of the Pinto, but rather the new 2017 GT supercar. And since the GT will be returning to Le Man next month to try and embarrass its old rival from Maranello again, we figure we’d pit it against the Ferrari 488 GTB.


LOOKS: That thud you heard when Ford unveiled the GT at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show was the sound of the internet’s jaw hitting the floor. It’s both instantly recognisable and incredibly futuristic.

LOOKS: The 488’s looks are an evolution of the already gorgeous 488, with cleaner front and rear fascias and larger air side air intakes to feed it’s all-new turbocharged engine.

LOOKS: Few cars can claim to be prettier than the 488, but the GT is one of them.

Ferrari 488 GTB: 0





DRIVETRAIN: Ford is yet to reveal how much horsepower the GT will be packing, but previously promised a number greater than 600. We’re thinking the company is still tuning the 3.5-liter, twin-turbo V6 to produce something closer to 700 horsepower before deliveries begin in a few months. Power will all be channeled to the rears through a 7-speed, dual-clutch transmission.

DRIVETRAIN: The 488’s 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 produces a massive 661 horsepower — one more than the Enzo — and 560 foot-pounds of torque. Ferrari has also gone to great lengths to ensure power delivery is as linear as possible, meaning turbo lag has been all but eliminated. It too powers the rear wheels through a 7-speed, dual-clutch transmission.

DRIVETRAIN: Unless Ford has a has a big surprise on the way, we’re not sure the GT will match or exceed the 488’s huge output numbers.

PERFORMANCE: Ford is also yet to reveal any specifics on performance for the GT, but has promised one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any car available, meaning straight-line speed and handling should be off the charts. A 0-60 time of around 2.8 seconds and top speed of 215 mph both seem well within reach.

PERFORMANCE: The 488 puts its tiny V8 to good use with a 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds flat and a top speed of 205 mph. Though with its carbon fiber construction, it’s heavier than you might think at 3,362 pounds.

PERFORMANCE: This isn’t the first time a Ford has out-performed a Ferrari.

RACING PEDIGREE: After an attempt to to buy Ferrari fell through at the 11th hour, Edsel Ford went beast mode and demand his engineers to build him a car that would beat Ferrari at the 24 hours of Le Mans. The GT40s did just that four times starting in 1966, and Ferrari would never take an overall victory at Le Mans again.

RACING PEDIGREE: After getting thoroughly whomped at Le Mans, Ferrari refocused efforts on its Formula 1 team. Ferrari is the only manufacturer that has competed in F1 since the series started in 1950 and boasts 15 drivers’ and 16 manufacturers’ titles. The company has also remained active in GT racing around the world, which is where the 488 currently competes.

RACING PEDIGREE: The Ferrari-Ford rivalry goes back decades, and we’ll see it revived in a few weeks when the 488 GTB and Ford GT race cars square off in the GTE class at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. For now though, we’ll award a point each.
