If I were taking a $200k vacation... that would be it.
Although short, not many people can say they saw the earth from the edge of space

Scaled Composites - A.K.A Burt Rutan is THE badass.

Branson is just the cash. Could have been Buffet or anyone else behind the dollars, but it could ONLY have been Rutan and his team to make this work. :bow1:

Branson is the only one who will fund something like this..you have to admire the man who dreams this up...unless it was just a proposal that he funded.

You can dream and fund all you want, if there are no qualified people to turn dream into reallity, its just a dream.

Toyota spent more money/largest budget than any team in F1. They could not even "buy" 1 win in the many years they were involved. Ross Brawn/Rory Byrne/ and Adrian Newey have ammased huge success in F1regardless of who's name was on their shirts. Money is available, technical genius is in short supply. Burt Rutan is a genius. ;)

Money and looking good only get you so far, someone somewhere has to make a breakthrough to advance technology.
Where does looking good even come into play in this?

world revolves around money...was that was before the tech craze..will be during it...
there are many people who could have built something like this but only one saw this as a business opportunity and went after it...do you think that if Rutan did not work on this that somebody else would not have?
like you said "somebody somewhere"

the old "where there is a will there is a way" should be:
"where there is money. there is a way"

^^^I think you are failing to see all Rutans acomplishments before Branson even came into the picture (and the list is huge - you should look it up). Branson signed on in 2008, 4 years after Rutan designed, built, and successfully won the X-prize with spaceship one in 2004. This project was partially funded by Paul Allen. So who is the common denominator? Burt Rutan and scaled composites. Branson saw a promising project and jumped on board, just as he did in F1 - After Ross Brawn resurrected the Honda team and began showing pace in preseason testing. The car was designed, built, and all windtunnel development etc was done pre-branson cash. Obviously Branson is a sharp businessman, but the projects he aligns himself with were already in progress, by people who brought new ideas and technology into reality before he entered the picture.

but will that reality become a business without branson?
I think that I am just doing a bad job of projecting what I have in mind when it comes to this. I agree that Rutan did a great job and have so in his past. but his contributions wont spur or advance this field. nor will TA's because while TA was funding the X prize winner. because TA's funding was not business minded IMHO. Branson saw what was out there and made a business idea out of it...and that will be copied by others with the capital to do so and this will create a whole new industry and this will spur the progress of tech. Money brings out the best in everybody..sad but ugly truth.

And I know of Rutan very well and have met both men in question numerous times with the latest being last year's london aerospace convention where my mom was a speaker. I grew up near Clear Lake where NASA is located and my mom is a lead researcher for Nasa at their Ellington field Aquatics Research lab which Branson rented out to do some tests on...it is basically the lab which simulates near-zero grav...I also interned with United Space Alliance during the summers in college...They used to make the space suits that everyone commonly sees worn by NASA peeps...Branson peeps did a lot of work with us when I was there.

this is very cool stuff. we have to acknowledge both branson's and rutan's work on this. rutan really developed the ships for the x-prize, and was the genius that designed the science behind the venture. however, the credit for commercializing this, and turning it into a halo brand for virgin, goes to branson, and i think both of them deserve credit for vision and effort.

At the OshKosh Fly In, in '04. I saw Space Ship 1 makes its LAST flight on the way to the Smithsonian. I shook Burt Rutan's hand. I missed "Sir Richard" by a day! Definatley 1 of the coolest guys on the planet !
This past summer I saw Space ship II there & flying.
Neat stuff.
