World’s thinnest minute repeater…

Unveiled recently by Vacheron Constantin, this new piece lays claim to the thinnest minute repeater in the world at 8.09mm (the caliber itself is a mere 3.90 mm). And it is an absolutely gorgeous watch.

Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Contemporaine Ultra-Thin Calibre 1731

41mm rose gold case, manual wind VC cal. 1731 (minute repeater, 65 hrs power reserve, Geneva Seal)

The watch is well proportioned with an elegant dial that is complicated only by a small seconds register at the 9 o’clock position.

There are still very few brands with an in-house minute repeater caliber, and of course Vacheron Constantin is one of them — the new caliber 1731 minute repeater on display here succeeds the manufacture’s caliber 755 repeater movement which has been around since the early 1990′s.

The new cal. 1731 replaces Piaget’s Emperador Coussin Minute Repeater, which measured in at 9.4mm thin, as the world’s thinnest. Although the Piaget caliber 1290P (4.8mm thin) is automatic/micro-rotor powered, not hand wound like the V).

You can see here the repeater hammers:

The minute repeater is one of the rarest and most prized complications in all of high watchmaking, and Vacheron has executed it masterfully here. Price on this piece will be somewhere around $350,000.
