There was a news story on the radio this morning about a guy that crashed his build it yourself airplane and died.....

oh come on now...you have just as much chance of getting killed scuba diving or getting pushed off a cruise ship. General Aviation is very regulated for the flying publics safety inculding home built aircraft. Currently 1.3 fatal accidents per 100,000 hours of flight. Just bring a parachute and problem solved. I would never take off in a homemade aircraft without it.

Ever try to open an aircraft door against a 100+ mph wind?

Parachute (the right kind) makes a nice seat cushion ... but beyond that they are actually pretty useless.
