Panerai PAM 521 Radiomir Platino and PAM 522 Radiomir Oro Rosso Special Editions
by Kyle Stults - Perpetuelle

Platinum, plexi, 12-side bezel, Minerva cal…

Here’s a first look at two new SE’s from Officine Panerai. Although hese two Special Edition Panerai’s were previewed to some at SIHH 2013 in Geneva earlier this year, their status has essentially been *unofficial* and the watches have flown under radar until now. These new models are inspired by a rare example of the Radiomir dating from the late 1930s, carrying through many of the original details such as the 12-sided bezel, plexi crystal and more. The juxtaposition of the brushed bezel and the polished case is sure to draw both yays and nays from the Paneristi.

And back to the present-day editions:

According to Panerai:

At the same time as it was supplying the Italian Navy with watches designed for the underwater missions of its commandos, the Panerai store in Florence made a few examples of the Radiomir with a special 12-sided bezel, carrying the inscription “OFFICINE PANERAI – BREVETTATO”.

The presence of this inscription, referring to the patent of the luminous substance Radiomir which later gave its name to the watch itself, suggests that these models were not for use in wartime operations but rather for presentation to the military authorities who were testing the new instruments.

The vintage character of the watch is also reinforced by its original spherical winding crown.

Price is ~$76,000 in platinum and $53,000 in rose gold.

Very nice! Personally, I wish the Platinum version had matching hands... Don't really like the gold with platinum look. They look great on the Rose Gold version.
