See more McLaren P1 GTR photos at AutoGuide.comMcLaren just revealed what might be the products that steals the show at Pebble Beach this week with a staggering 1,000 hp.
Like the 650 S Sprint, this is a track-only vehicle that McLaren is offering to well-heeled performance junkies who aren’t satisfied with driving a street car on a race track. McLaren says it designed the car to be the “best drivers’ car in the world on track,” re-purposing the familiar tagline it used before the P1 was fully revealed. Normally the P1 makes 890 hp, but the company re-tuned it in this case to makes 986 hp (or 1000 PS) through the same plug-in hybrid powertrain and 3.8-liter turbocharged V8 as the road car.
On top of being more powerful, the P1 GTR runs on racing tires and wears a series of aerodynamic enhancements including massive front splitter second only to the crazy rear wing that greatly increase downforce to improve stability at high speeds and give it improved cornering ability. McLaren also made the P1 GTR wider to further improve its performance capability.
Production will be strictly limited to 375 copes and will cost £1.98 a pop or roughly $3.3 million in this part of the world. For that price, customers get the car and access to a training program designed to make sure they’re capable of driving the car. The training program includes consultations with the McLaren driver fitness team and access to a McLaren racing simulator.
You also participate in at least six dedicated international drive events that will take place at F1 tracks around the world and it’s probably a good thing because it sounds like the company isn’t leaving anything on the table with this one.
