Thanks CI. Other than the endorsement of military and law enforcement, what makes HK stand above the rest for you?
I actually like the feel and balance of the USPs, and I don't have big hands. Some people don't like them beacause the have a large grip do to the double stack magazine. Also, I like the fact that they are built like an anvil. HK USPs are composite frame guns like a Glock and some others, but what makes their construction different, is that under the composite reinforcement their is a steel skeleton that keeps all the slide guides and moving parts in alignment. Check out the new HK 45 its an updated model from the HK USP .45. Not avaiable in Cali yet. :( But when available here, its my next purchase in desert tan/black.
I would highly recommend going to the range and renting HK, Sig, and Glock just to see if you like the feel. As focused had previously mentioned, if you're not comfortable with a certain gun, then your not going to shoot well. Also want to mention that we are splitting hairs here with these three brands, they are all good. I currently own 2 HKs and a Sig and plan on getting a full frame glock in the future. ;)

I definitely recommend Kimber for off the shelf and in the "affordable" category. MTK's Les Baer is a badass but is on the higher end for a starter. I have had several Kimbers and love them. No tricks, no BS, just reliable proven 1911 design. I don't have any experience with the Sig 1911 but if it is like anything they do...I am sure it is great.

Ha yeah the Kimbers are compact (3"). The wheeler would be .44 with a pachmayr. I love going to the range and plinkin' with the .45 and then wheelin' out the .44 to wake everyone up. The digicam Kimber is the UltraCovert that I have since sold to a good friend. We went to the range, I pulled out the UC II and handed it to him. 3 boxes later he was sold and it was sold. It has a sweeter trigger than the standard UltraCarry along with the KimPro coating on the frame. My daily carry is the Ultra Carry II with CT grip. I will say that the night sights are ALOT better than the stock sights. All that said, I love it as a daily carry with a Milt Sparks VersaMax II IWB holster.

Secure, thanks for the advice. (Apologies to everyone else for highjacking the thread). I was just checking Kimbers site out and like what I see. From the specs I'm liking the Custom II and Tactical Pro II full framers. Add another piece to my shopping list.

I just started shopping a while ago. I have narrowed it down to a Sig 40 or 44. I know I want the larger grip too. A friend has a Kimber 1911 that I shot too. I felt more comfortable with the Sig in my hand. I think (I am a newbie here) the sig has a double action trigger (longer pull?) that with the fat grips felt very good. Sig sells factory refurb's for about $250 off new pricing and come with the full warranty. Would you suggest buying a Refurb to save money or used?

Also I need a good night stand safe. Can you recommend anything? I need to be able to get into fast in the dark for security but it has to be safe for the family.

Bonehead,

Are you the same bonehead from the M5board? Howdy!

Couple more questions...

This us for security at home. It will be shot at the range to gain skill and to keep my skills sharp once I feel confident with it. How many clips should I buy? Is there different rounds that you should buy for range vs home security? How long is the shelf life of the rounds? I guess what I am asking is how many boxes should I buy at the beginning and if you should buy different stuff for different shooting how many of each should I buy.

For at home gun storage I would recommend a GunVault for underneath the bed or nightstand.
GunVault - Gun Safes for Home or Office - Home
As for rounds and mags......get a few boxes of personal protection rounds and buy 250 rd boxes of off the shelf ammo for the range. I usually buy mine at wally world or academy. Stockpile if you want. I typically keep 1000 rounds on hand as buying in bulk is always cheaper. You can get into the fancier JHP +p rounds if you like. My take is that you want to make sure that you fire a round that is going to take down the perp in the least rounds possible. That being said, I have no desire to get shot with ANY round. They will all hurt!

Oh yeah, buy 4 mags at least. That way when you are at the range you dont have to reload as frequently.

I don't know anything about night stand safes. Factory refurbished is as good as new. The manufacturer inspects every component to see that it is within factory tolerences and replaces what is out of spec.
Not all manufacturers offer factory refurb, but since Sig does and if they have the model you want available, I would say thats a safe bet.

i'd suggest a smith and wesson .50cal [any barrel length]

Smith & Wesson Model 500 .50-Cal. Magnum Is The King Of Handguns - Popular Mechanics

the gun does seem expensive, but it is worth it even if you just take it out to the gun range...like that saying goes [better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it]

-the sound alone will put the fear of god in someone
-and when they're starring down a barrel that closely resembles the Holland Tunnel...they'll be out that door before even thinking about it
-finally, cosmetically something like this would be less inconvinient displayed than a dusty glock in your underwear drawer
LoL, Jon if there is one thing I've learned about your posts, Your definently out to stir it up.

I would recommend factory magazines. There are aftermarket manufactures that make replacement magazines for almost any brand of firearm for less money than the factory mags, but: A semi auto pistol mag is part of the working mechanism of the gun, so it need to work properly. After the last round is fired, its the mag spring that locks the slide back so when you load another mag you just need to hit the slide release and fire.
4 or more mags is def good. I have 10 per each of my HKs. Why? because they are factory brand new and were on a major blow out sale.

Don't do like I did and shoot MTK's Les Baer.

I was all set on getting a Kimber; it fit the budget and I wanted to add a 1911 to the collection.

Unfortunately before I could make that purchase and satisfy that 1911 need. We went to the range again, I ran another mag through MTK's Les Baer. I've since started skipping meals to save up money. I'll probably start the 10 day wait in a few days.

Focused, again - I can't make it this upcomming Tuesday, but I will try to schedule for the following Tuesday. What time do you normally go to the range? Good luck on the purchase of your Les Baer Custom. Quality over quantity any day.

Alright. That's it. I have a meeting tomorrow morning (ugh), but will try to get out to the Scottsdale Gun Club afterwards and see what's what. I'm psyched!
Ummm yeah! SGC is the shit. I have a current project to model after their design. They have the finest range in the country. Let me know your thoughts!

As for mags, definitely definitely definitely go factory!

And to focused, following MTK will bankrupt yo ass! Kimber is a fine start. I was looking at LB, Wilson, and Nighthawk recently. For the money, stick with Kimber. Its the best bang for buck (pun intended).
You gotta crawl before you walk! :)

I'm open to either Monday or Tuesday this week. Next week Tuesday is a no go. Have to work that night.

Very true.. fortunately I know my limits. Unfortunately, they're no where near MTK's. I agree, Kimber's are great. Shooting and guns aren't a new thing to me so I don't mind spending a bit more.
