OK guys, so about a month ago I decided to venture into the app world (iPhone/Android). My existing online business does well; however, I'm always looking for growth and diversity as well as keeping myself busy and entertained. I can still remember the day (Dec 01 2009) when I started my old web site (not knowing anything about business) and how exciting it was, primarily because I was starting from literally nothing. I think I had like $80 in the bank and my car was on the verge of getting repossessed. It was an exciting journey that I want to experience again (but this time with some business and marketing experience!).

I've decided to share this bloggish thread with my L4P fam as I know there are a lot of people on here with big dreams. Many are scared to take that risk or plunge to achieve their goals, so hopefully all the dreamers here can soak up some valuable information from this start up and push forward to get where they want to be in life!

You don't need vcap to be successful, I have already proven this.

A bit about myself.

I am NOT an app developer. Many people make the excuse to try something (like making an app) because they aren't capable of "coding" etc, etc. Any ambitious businessman will not let this hold him back as coding is not a necessity. You think the owner of EA games codes his own stuff? He's just good at giving orders! I am paying a guy on oDesk about (more or less) $1400 bucks to build my app which isn't anything crazy to be honest, then again, Snapchat or Instagram isn't anything epic either. There are many book smart people out there that went to college for years upon years and program apps for a living yet still make far less than 100k/year. Society makes people believe they need to be some sort of genius and go to university/school to obtain financial freedom however, I (and many others) have proven this to NOT be the case.

My beliefs:
-You don't need a lot of money to make big money. It just makes it easier.
-Marketing is more important than the product itself.
-Don't invent something YOU would use (you want to appeal to the masses, and if you're an entrepreneur, odds are you are smarter than most).

Next post I will reveal more info on the app itself, how much I will spend on marketing, and my marketing approach.

Appreciate your feedback. ;)

Pete

OK boys, I been a bit busy with business/fam stuff so I haven't made an update in a couple days. Basically I don't want any investors in this project as I want to prove myself that I can build this essentially on my own minus coding (couple friends helping with gfx and such :)).

My insight on an app and what I think a successful app requires:

-Social media integration (this helps spread your app aka. free advertising)
-A reason for people to open the app again (this is why IG is worth so much; on avg, people open it 10+ times a day)
-Entertainment factor. (what can I say, people like funny things and want to be entertained. There is no recession in the entertainment industry, ask floyd mayweather jr)

My particular app will be free. If you look at the top grossing charts you'll notice that 99% of them are free. It is almost foolish to have a paid app because you can make money other ways (not just advertising). I am anticipating large download numbers the day the app drops onto the market... After all, more downloads, more money making potential! Pinterest is the perfect example, worth 2.5 billion, yet has made no money at all. Why is it worth so much? It has millions upon millions of downloads, the traffic just has to be monetized... Its like owning a piece of land with a huge amount of oil underneath.

Will continue part 3 on Tuesday. :)

This is contrary to most advice in the startup world. Solving your own problem gives you a unique product lens to guide you through difficult decisions. I think what you're really trying to say is to pick a big market, not a niche. Now that is good advice.

Regardless, wish you the best of luck.

Yeah you definitely want to widen your market as much as possible to get the most amount of users it can cater to.

For example Instagram, photographers can post their work w/o filters, wannabe photographers can post their pics, and all the teens like it for the social networking and commenting ability.

So apps is the new business?

are you working under a company name?..got a website for this app etc?...

Outstanding initiative! Subscribed. :) I work for a large telecom provider and I'm surrounded by all levels of app developers. If I could harness them into one unit, it would make a great start up. But for now, I'll keep reading.

Well done.

Happy to see a member actually putting himself out there and starting into the tech world, but I'm really shocked by all the interest here. We haven't heard anything other than it's an app!

$1400 in development (outsourced or not) will not get you far.

Reality is, it's not a build it and they will come type of business (nothing is in my experience). There are over 3 quarters of a million apps in the Apple App Store alone.

I sound like a huge hater, but I'm not. I just think people need to not get so wound up once they hear the word 'app', it cracks me up.

I don't think you get the point of the thread, I believe he is trying to show forum members how his project is unfolding to learn from it.

Hence why alot of forum members are very interested in seeing and learning from this thread...

Sorry for the delay guys, I will update you tonight. Just been really caught up! Usually my posts are pretty long as well so I have to proof read what I write haha.

This app I am going for a large valuation within the first 3 months of its existence. That is the goal. Spend 10k turn it into 10X more :) (wont be 1 billion but who else can say they turned 10 grand into even 100,000 within 3 months at super low risk).

I once was interested in building an app.....until I was given a quote on how much it would cost. Then I was like

it was like 15,000 if i remember correctly. The more features you want, the costs climbs exponentially...oh then there is the fact that apple can reject an app for any reason they wish. This is not mentioned often. Not going to spend 15k to get rejected and have the company that made it be like "sorry bro, no refunds."

More than likely, if I ever make an app, I'll do my best to get it done in html 5 http://www.businessinsider.com/battle-between-html5-vs-native-apps-2013-5

I've started to lean coding. Much easier than paying all that just for it to flop.

I disagree. HTML5 is no more difficult than HTML 4 was. However, what people consider HTML5 is more difficult of a definition. Javascript has taken over. There are stateful web pages now with the History api (google "history js") that allow you to make more hardcore apps like Facebook. There are entire javascript frameworks now such as backbone js and ember js. Then theres responsive design, as well. Not to mention the File API and the fun you can have with CSS3 transitions.

The web has come a long way, in a good way, but as an HTML5 expert I can attest that it's not yet as responsive as native code. Not to mention I've been screwed by Titanium Appcelerator before (I wrote an app, then iOS update broke it, but my app didn't even remotely work with the new version of Titanium).

But on the plus side, you can write the HTML5 app completely online and it'll work for any modern phone platform and no app store restrictions.

Xeno, what do people use to write apps? Call me old fashioned but I always wrote html in notepad.

OP, as long as you don't make yet another photo sharing app, then do what you want. God knows there's a million of these apps.

Nothing wrong with notepad. I hand-code as well, but I use a program called Coda. It has nice syntax highlighting and little helpers to make things quicker, like auto-completing the tags as you type them out. A lot of people prefer Sublime Text as their IDE of choice. (IDE = Integrated Development Environment... but is really used to describe any text editor designed for coding).

As for what people use to write apps, they typically use Xcode from Apple to code their Objective-C, but you can also use the GCC compiler from the command line.

Just a quick update, the app is going as scheduled and I will post all the info on it within the next couple of days. Reason I haven't posted is because we were hit with a giant flood (Calgary) and I haven't been home in the last 4 days. I also have not seen any of my cars since getting evacuated so I don't know what to expect. There is no power in my condo so I'm pretty much living on my laptop and backpack! Hoping for the best.
