Got another V12 - Poverty Sucks

Just picked up this red SL65 shown in my photo album. It currently has 19" AMG rims, and I may eventually get some after market 20" rims. But in the mean time these AMG rims don't look too bad. However it seems the offset on the rear needs to come out more as the rear wheels seem tucked in too much. Anyone familiar with these rims shown and how do determine a spacer size to push them out more? I went on ebay and it seems to indicate 10mm spacer needed for pre 2013 SL, however that is only about .394 inch and doesn't seem like much.

Sorry guys, it probably was a funky posting title. But I was running off those old posters where the English guy stands by his Rolls saying poverty sucks...and it does. Glad I ain't there, just in debt! I took a closer look at the rear wheel on the red SL compared to my pewter SL with 20" and it seems the wheel on the red SL needs to come out close to an inch to be even with the top edge of the fender. I don't know anything about spacers, but that seems like quite a large spacer, even if they make them that big.

AWD, check my photo album for the other toys, mostly modified Panteras.

I would not run spacers you are asking for problems. Just buy some new forged wheels with a custom offset. The spacers can break the lug bolts off because they will be to long and a host of other issues.

Don't let anyone tell you different either. I have installed hundreds of sets of aftermarket wheels in my day. You would be putting yourself and others at risk.

OP, ignore this guy. Spacers are safe to run. Nice SL!

You don't know anything!! Spacers are sold for show only ask any manufacturer of them.

How many sets of wheels have you sold??

How many sets have you installed???

They break for 2 reasons one you have longer lug bolts which stress differently than factory another is the fact that the aluminum spacer and the aluminum wheel expand and contract differently when heated and cooled so the spacers work themselves loose. When they loosen up they stress the studs more and cause them to break.

Thanks for the input both ways about spacers. I will search on the web about that subject a little more too. However just common sence made me think large spacers and lengthier bolts may not be a good thing. Maybe that is why I saw on ebay for those same wheels only 10mm spacers were suggested for pre 2013 SL cars (thats only about .394" and so that may not even make much difference in appearance). I am thinking I may just do the switch now since the AMG wheels & tires on the car now are brand new, and may sell well. Then I was thinking about 20" Modulare wheels (deep dish or not), or some other good brand. Hard to decide since there are so many wheels on the market, and I also hear there are some issues with the 3 piece wheels too. Here are couple I am thinking about from Modulare. The first one shown is deep dish. May try and photoshop either of them on my car to get an idea.

I understand what you're saying. Of course custom wheels are a better option...

How many wheel spacer failures have you seen? If the correct spacers and studs/lug bolts are installed, they will not fail.

Ive tracked my CLK with 10mil spacers on front and 15mil in back 5 or 6 times and put 6k miles on it (which were mostly hard driving) and never had any problems. I also have run spacers on my range rover for 30k miles (which included off-roading) and I have never run into a single problem.

I also know countless people who run spacers and I have never heard of any issues.

Please explain to me how I am endangering myself and others with spacers again?

And OP, car looks great, time for some new wheels tho.

I would do 12mm rear and 12mm front, or 15mm rear and 12mm front if you want it to be more aggressive. I would recommend H&R hub centric spacers. Your also going to need longer lug bolts..

Ok so when you bolt up wheels with lug bolts they do not touch the threads but a spacer can move and ride against the threads. They are not held in place by anything but being sandwiched in between wheels and hubs. If the wheels loosen up from not being retorked or rotated like they should the spacers can spin and ride against the threads and break the bolts.

Will it happen every time no can it happen yes.
