Fiat selling Ferrari...to VW?

Autoblog - Marchionne admits Fiat might sell Ferrari ahead of Merger.

To be honest, this confuses me. Ferrari and Lamborghini in the same company seems less than ideal. That said, VW isn't known for screwing up.

The question is what effect will Ferrari and Lamborghini have on each other?

They already have Bugatti, Bentley, Lamborghini and Porsche and that has worked out fine so far.

don't forget about Audi!
you know i always wonder.. they got that much money.. but why don't they improve on their VW line..

I think he meant it from a rivalry standpoint. How would their future pan out being under the same roof. Their founders were pretty much enemies and now theyre going to possibly be owned by the same company.

cuz vw's are supposed to be cheaper economical cars for the masses, they gotta differentiate their products

They are the peoples car.
I said this a while back and it wouldnt suprise me. Piech is the Dark Lord of the Sith look how he outmaneuvered Porsche. I am a long time VW fan I am not sure what part of their product line you want improved. Could you expand on that some?

Exactly...

The ownership of Porsche, Bugatti, Audi and Bentley gives them different overall market segments. Ferrari would be a direct competitor for Lamborghini owned by the same company. Seems to be a bit of a conflict.
VW FTW! owning some of the best supercar companies in the world, i think thats pretty cool!!!!!!!
**** that! i don't want a four wheel drive ferrari... ew....
no vw!!! no!!! dont downgrade like that!!
no one will buy a jetta from the makers of ferrari!
no no no no no no no
All I can do is hold my head down and shake it from left to right...
Talk about monopolizing the highend sports car market!!! Good God!!!

The good side is that neither brand would have die. Lambo sales are down? Ferrari is up and it balances out (and vice/versa)

This would also give Lambo some real F1 technology to build off of.... oh. my. God. to think of what will come of that!!

I don't think it would work that way.

Individual business units would be expected to stand on their own. If Lamborghini sales are up for a few years in a row and trending to continue that while Ferrari was trending downward, you can bet a business decision would be made to put down the struggling brand...or at least sell it off to China, India or one of the Koreas.
I dont see this happening anytime soon. Ferrari has been consistently profitable for Fiat. Not to mention that fiat would have to sell Maserati as well bc Maseratis are painted at the ferrari factory and use ferrari engines, designers, etc.
If thats seriously going to happen, I'll shoot myself.
