This is no good. Several nearby airports to me are slated to lose their ATC!

FAA Planning for $600 Million in 2013 Spending Cuts

February 22– To prepare for the possibility of a budget sequestration on March 1, 2013, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is making plans to reduce its expenditures by approximately $600 million for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2013.

Among the changes we are considering are furloughing the vast majority of our 47,000 employees for approximately one day per pay period; closing over 100 air traffic control facilities; eliminating the overnight shift at over 60 facilities; and reducing preventive maintenance and support for all air traffic control equipment. All of these changes will be finalized as to scope and details through collaborative discussions with our users and our unions.

Of all the government programs that need cutting, certainly the FAA is one of them. smfh.

$600 million out of the FAA's massive budget shouldn't do the harm they are saying, somethings fishy per usual. Anyway some cuts are good no matter what program so at least they are starting somewhere.

My pilots don't seem to really care much...No ATC is no sweat off their balls, they might actually prefer it jumping around to a lot of the regional/local strips we frequent.

This whole tower thing is really been frustrating me lately. Some of the 149 towers on the closing list are actually indeed quite busy and not having a tower there worries me. For an example the battle creek airport in Michigan is home of a few commercial carries along with Western Michigan Universities flight program (which has a fleet of around 50 aircraft). Between all the primary instruction going on, airliners landing, and IFR students shooting practice approaches I can just see that airport becoming chaotic and putting much more burden on the pilots to be aware of their surroundings.

Definitely sounds like an issue, ATC is always good to have to inform you of traffic when you are simulating IFR and there is a lot of VFR around. It would be a nightmare to train without that added traffic awareness.

MANY of those towers were built with stimulus money and were never really needed in the first place. I feel bad for the folks losing their jobs but flying into uncontrolled airports should not be the least bit of a problem for any competent pilot. I fly for an airline and we go into uncontrolled fields all the time and have to contend with GA traffic. Most of those places have radar coverage from other larger nearby airports for IFR approaches anyhow. This is nothing more than the govt trying to cause an emotional response from an ignorant public.

Another part that bugs me is all of the towers that closed were contract towers which are about three times less expensive to run then FAA operated towers. Just shows how the private sector is still more efficient than government managed operations, and they are the ones that get screwed over.

Where do they get this stuff from? Sequestration is a 2% over all cut of the NEW proposed budget for 2014 onward, there is no cut to the existing base, they just won't raise budgets as much as expected. The Fed pumps in $85Bn a month into the economy, and they can't cut $85Bn a year? Give me a break.

I wasn't even aware that the federal government had constitutional authority to spend money on aviation. You learn something new every day.
