The real question in my mind is why you are wearing a black suit in the first place. Are you a waiter, a maître d', attending a funeral, a musician, or in the mob? Other than those professions/occasions, wearing a black suit isn't particularly well-advised. Stick with charcoal or navy if you want the conservative business look, and go lighter along those colors (mid grays, lighter blues, etc.) for a decidedly less formal look.

For occasions when it is appropriate to wear a black suit, a black shoe is always best. Funeral? Black shoes to honor the occasion's formality. You can see the logic here. Regardless of the shade of brown (dark brown, cognac, merlot, walnut), it is one color that simply does not pair well with black under any circumstance really.

Ya you can wear black with brown shoes, just make sure they are square toed and you button the bottom button on the suit. Also maybe freshen it up with a white belt and an even one of those hilarious comic ties. You'll be the talk of the ball
