Wow, crazy...I wouldnt have expected it to compress that much. Wonder what the speeds were. Notice the paramedics cut the chassis to get him out. The steering wheel is bent too...definitely wearing a full face helmet if I'm driving one of these.

 

Note the lack of damage to the wall... :noidea:

 

reminds me of that old pic taken in the midwest somewhere with a perfectly clean '99 hummer standing right next to a brick wall it had just taken out

That thing crumpled! I hope the driver got nothing more than borken legs. I would be worried about having a accident in one of them, nothing to stop anything.

 

Hmm, driver did NOT walk away from the crash. That's bad.

Wow... I'm really shocked at the lack of integrity of the chassis, a brick wall is not THAT hard relatively. It's still made up of smaller pieces glued together, if it was concrete I could maybe see that happening. An Atom should have been a much fairer match for a wall like that. Hope the driver makes a full recovery, and I hope the makers of that car do some SERIOUS analysis on it.

 

Most of the problem is where he/she crashed. The front end hit that high curb. That is why the chassis simply buckled in.

 

Good catch!!! I missed the curb because I was too busy staring at the mangled wreck of tubing and suspension parts.

 

Passenger side appears to be cut from the hydraulic cutter/spreader... so don't let that fool you either.

 

Yeah I can see where they cut the tubing, but that buckling up front is unacceptable.

 

It is totally acceptable. Any other vehicle that isn't based off a tube chassis design would have EASILY made the damage/destruction 10x worse. The overall design of the Atom held up quite well. A full framed vehicle may have faired similar to the Atom, but any unibody car would have been toast.

 

The compliance of the Atom's chassis probably saved this driver's life from a basal neck fracture.

He hit hard guys. He is incredibly lucky to have only 2 broken legs. I hope he makes a full recovery, stay safe out there.
