I bought an expensive fixed 50mm cannon (1.4 I believe) and was disappointed in using for car shots because you have to stand really far away and it focuses odd too when shooting large objects such as an entire car shot. But it is very good on shooting aspects of cars such as shooting emblems, and also very good at portraits. I have some corgi shots in my photo album if you want to take a look, you can tell which ones are the 50mm as the image is very crisp and background blurry. A low f 35mm would have suited me much better at car shows, especially early morning/late night. Maybe try renting one first before you buy.

That EF 50mm lens is great for the money. Not sure if it's ideal to cover the entire car, but good for close-ups of car parts, and definitely portraits.
