Tommy Burger on Beverly and Rampart. Best I've had in LA.

    Agreed.

You can always get an expensive restaurant burger that may be a hit or miss. But Tommy's is always consistent. The meat isn't the greatest but the whole combination of chili and cheese is win.

Old thread, but I'll throw my $0.02 in there:

    1) I know people will roll their eyes and say it's not a "gourmet" burger, but if you like spicy burgers (which I love), my favorite burger is surprisingly the Kilauea burger at Islands Restaurant. Yes, it's a chain. Yes, the decor is cheesy. But, I love that burger... even more than the other great "gourmet" burgers in LA.

    2) If you still don't buy Islands, then my 2nd choice is Umami burger in Santa Monica. Some call it a fad, which it might be. Some say it's inconsistent, which I feel it is based on the daily "specials", but the quality is still decent. On its good days, it's better than my #3 option. On it's bad days, it's not.

    3) The Counter - consistent and gives you the most options of constructing your own burger

    4) Barney's Burgers in Brentwood. Good, but I don't like it as much as the ones above.

    5) If you're a foodie on a budget, then In-n-Out is always a great choice. For the same cost, I'd never choose it over the ones above, but you can't beat a great value.

Anybody ever had the burger at R&D kitchen in Santa Monica??? It blows any other los angeles "gourmet" burger away. as for non-gourmet Barney's can be good if you catch them on a good day, Counter is ok but over rated, In-n-out's burgers are fantastic but their fries suck so bad I refuse to eat there, Tommy's is a huge win for everybody except for whoever has to clean your toilet.
