What? Imgur has albums and galleries. You can definitely do that. You can also do it on Flickr. And many, many other photo sharing sites.

This is terrible advice.
Terrible advice by doing something one of the top 30 most trafficked sites has gained success from? Lol

You need the traffic first to even consider donations to be some sort of strategy and even when you get the traffic, it doesn't mean it's an instant win. I create software for jailbroken iDevices and have 100,000+ downloads on my free projects. Of those downloads, only ONE person has asked how they could donate. I know other developers who have 10x as many projects and downloads and face the same issues. Reddit is probably the best example of a platform with successful integration of donations but they didn't become successful because of having this ability. Reddit was started in 2005 and iirc it wasn't until 2010 when Reddit Gold(or donations) was introduced.

This idea is about 10 years too late. I owned an image hosting website before there was facebook, and when eBay only allowed you to upload 7 pictures per auction. I sold subscription packages on eBay, for eBay sellers. At the highest point, I had about 400 members, paying an average of $8 per month. I saw the writing on the wall and sold the website around 2004-5ish.

Honestly bro, I'm not trying to be mean, but this is a terrible idea to waste your time and money on.

I'd have to disagree and say sites like Flickr, imgur, box and many more are doing well. and to be honest img hosting is much more popular than it was 10 years ago.
Facebook and LinkedIN are doing well, too. That doesn't mean it would be a wise investment to start up a new social network. Your concept has been beaten to death and your space is occupied by free alternatives that do what 99.9% of people need them to do. I'd focus my time and money on something a little more cutting edge and innovative.

Again I'd disagree if you can do it differently and better why not try? My site is also free and innovative to what other sites are doing. You should sign up my man.

I definitely will. I love supporting small businesses, and especially start ups. My opinion of how you are spending your time and money, however, remains the same.

They didn't build a business off donations, and it's bad advice as it's unlikely to happen twice.

Imgur was bootstrapped. How? People pay for pro users accounts, enterprise image hosting for huge customers like Yahoo and Stack Exchange, as well as advertisements. Yes they take donations, because they have the unique support of Reddit (massive driver of their growth) combined with billions and billions of page views a month. It's a complete exception.
