Ok so what I want to know is what's so special about these cars? I love the way they look but there is a certain practical sense in me that can't seem to figure out why they are so expensive and so coveted? How does it compare to a RR HSE or Supercharged? Just really looking for some more insight on them from their owners as to why I should or shouldn't consider getting one for the wife well or myself...

Thanks
Aaron

I do not own own but after riding in one, the ride is stiff like riding in a sports car. I do not understand them either..... RR is more comfortable.

This is because of a tiny group of people called Armenians populate the majority of those cities, and at a young age we Armenians are disciplined and trained specifically to believe that the G Wagon, regardless of it being a 500, 550, or 55, is the most beautiful car ever made. idk why we love that car, we just do lol. ;)

Its a G thing ! you wont understand till you drive one especially ///AMG

True its a stiff ride but you can change the suspension , and trust me you cant compare it to a Range Rover or an X5 or a Cayenne these are more soft but the G is more manly with all do respect to the Range Rover , X5 and Cayenne owners .

Its expensive because its hand build and you can customize it the way you like ! plus you can cruise , showoff , drive anywhere anytime , quick , performs really good and comfy = ALL IN ONE

But like i said you have drive one for at least 24H to know what im talking about .

there's a certain BOSS factor to the G wagen that no other car reproduces.

I like the fact that those cars are rigid and pretty simple in the structure.
But the G-class is really annoying to drive on the street. Not fast, not really comfortable not really good fuel consumption etc.
It's a 40 year old car now and you feel it. Yes sure Mercedes has put up a lot of make up on it and new engines and interior but it's still miles away from a modern car like a Range Rover.

For me the comparison between Land Rover Defender and G-Class makes a lot more sense as both architectures are old and have both the same origin. Both were primarily used in the military and by workers.
Both are one hell of a good offroad vehicle. In this comparison the G-Class would win by miles when you judge by daily driving categories.

Word.
I think if your gunu get a G then you have to get it brand new, either a 550 or 55, because those 500 motors are pathetic . 295 hp for that tank is waaaaaay to little.

I'll give my opinion here, but I am certainly biased. I've got a 2002 G500. I don't really compare my truck to a RR or RRS. I do, however, compare it to a Defender 110, AM General Hummer (H1) and, to some extent, a Jeep JK Unlimited.
All were originally military designs that were adapted over time to civilian use (some changed more than others). In the case of the H1 and Gwagen, luxury guts were added, but the design never really changed. The H1, Jeep and the Defender stayed more utilitarian for the most part, but the Jeep has undergone TONS of changes over the years to get where it is now. The H1 didn't really become a luxury truck until late in life. It was cloth and plastic with optional leather seat covers up until 2004 and dead by 2006 (with no 2005 model).

I've had a Jeep YJ, 2 Jeep TJ's and an H1 in the past. My Gwagen is the perfect combination of what I like in a truck/SUV.
It's pretty comfortable inside with nice (if a little dated) options. It is a 10 year old truck after all.
It's awesome offroad...and I DO take mine offroad...alot.
It's big enough to haul my family and gear to the mountains or the beach. The Jeeps I had were too small. An Unlimited would be better, but still not as much room as my Gwagen.
It's small enough that I don't feel like I'm widening every trail I go down. An H1 will go more places than you would think, but you're always the widest thing on the trails, so you'll get more limb scratches than your friends.
It has the power to run down the interstate at 100mph (and mine is on 35's) and the gearing you need on the trails.

In short, the ride quality and road manners aren't even in the same realm as a RR, RRS, Cayenne, etc. It is a coil sprung, body-on-frame vehicle, with no fancy suspension adjustments...but it's a damn sight nicer than the other body-on-frame SUV's that are out there.

At the end of the day, if you hate how something looks, you wont like it no matter how good it is...and if you love how it looks, you will overlook ALOT of shortcomings to justify your lust. I'm sure I fall into the latter group, and that is fine with me.

Because the G Wagen does not look like a SUV especially designed for soccer-moms (nothing against them!).
Plus it is a former military vehicle with over 500 bhp (55) and all the luxury you can imagine and not a CAR designed to serve any special target group or market or what ever - It was designed to serve a purpose and that's what it looks like and that's what it makes so desirable.

--> thats something a true fan would say

Everyone else would say: It's expensive and I often see them driving around. It must be cool and it looks different - so i get the looks when roaming around.

I count myself to the group of fans, btw :D

I have had 5 G's and 6th due to arrive August....
Never had 1 issue with a G Wagon... You like them or hate them...no in between. If you drive a 55 you will get it...

Can Range Rover say that? Or, Tata Motors?

What was the sticker? 136K?

Not a ton of options... I was pleased to see i can now have an option to replace the ugly wood with Carbon Fibre... Also you can do the calipers.
