Here is one of the better ones I have:

That is GTR #27R seen wearing its Veuve Clicquot livery from the 1999 British GT Series where it was campaigned by AM Racing. That outfit was run by a UK chap named James Munroe who was an accountant for the publisher 'McGraw-Hill'. I am sure you might be wondering how an accountant can afford a car like that... well, it was eventually discovered that through some shell companies he'd created that he had embezzled the money used to purchase that F1 GTR, fund his race team and purchase a small collection of other specialty cars that included a McLaren F1 road car. He lost all his toys and went to prison for it. Tisk-tisk!

The car was auctioned to recover some of the lost fees and remained with the owner of the UK outfit 'Cars International' for the next decade and then was finally sold. That photo above on the lawn was taken outside Lord March's house at the 2005 Goodwood Festival of Speed. You can disregard the registration plate on the nose as it was just for show. No longtail GTR has ever been certified for road use. Both McLaren and Lanzante Motorsport in the UK who look after some of the cars have been asked to consider performing the conversion work before and decided that too much would need to be changed to make it possible and it would compromise the originality of the car so it will probably never be done.

Once in the hands of its new owner a decision was made to fully restore the car to its original look. Sadly the owner passed away in a racing accident before its unveiling - a real unfortunate tragedy. The restoration work was still finished though and the car made its scheduled appearance at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed wearing the its original Fly Yellow and Blue 'Parabolica' livery where it made a few runs up Lord March's driveway. Here's how the car looks today.

    One more small detail...

That's not a real car - at least it is not an image of a real car - but there was a longtail GTR that looked very similar. You can see a great set of photos of it by David Haueter on SmugMug.com which were taken when it was here in the USA for a few years. Woo! The McLaren F1 is my favorite car of all time.

I got a private tour of BMW Classic Group in Munich this September and I was like a little kid in a candy store when I saw the F1 and the FINA F1 GTR's.

Here are some of the pics I took:

Your photos are great - I really appreciate you sharing them. The Classics' Collection Museum is a very special place and for a long time they did not allow visitors to even take photos. I am so glad they have relaxed that policy.

The three F1s in your pictures are F1 road car #047, GTR 18R with short nose and tail and GTR #26R with the longtail bodywork. BMW AG have owned that F1 road car since new, but it was a replacement car for chassis #010 that their former CEO, Bernd Pischetsrieder, totaled in an accident in Germany in 1995. The engine from the earlier car is mounted on top of that green oil drum in the back corner of your final shot, just above and behind the V12 LMR that won Le Mans.

BMW USA also own GTR #17R (which looks quite similar to 18R in your shots) and keep it with other pieces of their motorsports collection at Rahal-Letterman Racing in Ohio.

Thank you for the kind words and thanks for the information about the cars. I didn't even know that!
