Beverley Hills’ Palazzo di Amore is still the most expensive estate in Beverly Hills, which makes it the most expensive in the United States and after hitting the market almost a year ago, has now had its asking price slashed by 25 percent from $195 million to $149 million.
The property was purchased in 2007 by real estate billionaire Jeff Greene, and at the time, was pretty much empty. Since then, Greene has constructed a no-expense-spared mansion on the massive 25-acre plot of land overlooking Los Angeles. In addition to the 35,000-square-foot Mediterranean-style primary residence, there’s also a 15,000-square-foot entertainment center and a guesthouse, which on its own, has 12 bedrooms and 23 bathrooms.
The manicured grounds look more like Versailles than Los Angeles, and include a quarter-mile-long driveway, lush gardens, sparkling pools and even a functioning vineyard capable of producing six types of wines: Sangiovese, Syrah, Cabernet, Merlot, Rose, and Sauvignon Blanc. The latter is adjacent to a 3,000-bottle wine cellar and tasting room. A two-acre organic farm is currently being added.
The ground floor of the main house consists of a chef’s kitchen with walk-in refrigerator, butler’s pantry, staff rooms and private offices. It’s also where you’ll find a resplendent living room, opulent dining room, breakfast room, game room and family room, all of which open onto the gardens outside. A three-car garage is attached to the house, but there’s additional garage space for up to 27 cars and driveway space for 150 cars.
When it comes to bedroom counts, the seconds floor is more about quality than quantity. The 5,000 square-foot master suite alone takes up one of the two second-floor wing and includes a Turkish-style spa in the bathroom. The other second-floor wing consists of four additional suites, one of which is a VIP suite with silk walls and its own kitchen.
Even with the 25 percent discount, Palazzo di Amore will still be the most expensive home ever sold in the United States if it sells at the current price. The current record holder is a $147-million East Hampton property. There’s also a home in Florida currently on the market for $200 million.
