Audi Sport is ‘Very Keen’ to Introduce a Hypercar

Audi would like to eventually introduce a high-performance car to slot in above the V10 R8 in its lineup, but such a model isn’t a priority for the brand right now.

Audi Sport boss and former head of Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann, told Automotive News in a recent interview that he is “very keen” to introduce a low-volume high-performance car of some sort. But despite customer interest in such a model, it won’t be an immediate priority for the brand. While it’s true that Audi Sport is looking to expand its number of product offerings, performance crossovers and electric cars will arrive well before a hypercar will.

Crossovers expected from Audi Sport in the near future include an RS Q5 and an RS version of the upcoming Q8. Less is known about potential Audi E-Tron performance models, but Winklemann said any of its electric offerings must have a good balance between performance and driving range. Other models expected from Audi Sport in the near future include a new RS 4 and RS 6 and new R8 model variants such as the rumored rear-wheel drive R8 GT.

Despite this product onslaught, Audi Sport won’t follow in Mercedes-AMG’s footsteps and offer a performance versions of every one of Audi’s models. Instead, Winkelmann wants his sub-brand to attract more customers to Audi while also helping to give it a more prestigious its image in the eye of the consumer.

We may find out what Audi Sport has planned for the near future when the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show kicks off next month.
