Would You Rather: Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio or BMW M3?

Last week we had some fun with a pair of election-themed cars and watched the Bernie Sanders Corvette Z06 take victory over a Donald Trump Lamborghini Aventador. This week we’re leaving the political realm to look at a pair of high-performance sedans that we guarantee will have zero impact on the 2016 presidential election.

After what seemed like decades of false starts, Alfa Romeo has finally re-entered the North American market with a pair of exciting performance cars, the 4C coupe/spider and this, the Giulia Quadrifoglio. But, the sport sedan market is packed with talent these days, and the BMW M3 stands atop the heap.

Let’s see how they compare.


LOOKS: The Giulia Quadrifoglio looks exactly like you want a modern Alfa sports sedan to look — tastefully flamboyant, perfectly stanced and plenty of character Like any good fast car from Italy, it doesn’t make much effort to hide its intentions.

LOOKS: The M3 looks as Germanic as the Guilia does Italian. Where the Alfa is all swoops and curves, the M3 is polygons and creases. Ignoring the Bangle-era cars, it’s the kind of thing BMW has done so well for years.

LOOKS: Both look great, but Alfa is the car that will make people say, “Whoa, what’s that?”

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio: 1

BMW M3: 0


ENGINE: The Alfa’s 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 shares a few choice bits with its cousins over at Ferrari and produces 503 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque between 2,500 and 5,500 rpm. It also sounds pretty fantastic.

ENGINE: After a brief stint with V8 power in the E92, the straight six has returned to M3, with a pair of newly added turbochargers. The 3.0-liter unit produces 431 horsepower, 405 lb-ft of torque and revs to 7,300 rpm.

ENGINE: We can’t promise they won’t catch fire, but Italians know how to build engines.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio: 2

BMW M3: 0


PERFORMANCE: With all-wheel-drive and active aero (heady stuff for a sport sedan), the Giulia has no problem putting all that power to the ground. It does 0-60 in 3.8 seconds and tops out at 191 mph. Alfa claims a mighty impressive Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes 39 seconds.

PERFORMANCE: With perfect 50:50 weight distribution and relatively low mass, the M3 puts more emphasises on feel and usability over outright pace. Equipped with the optional dual-clutch transmission, the M3 sprints to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and onto an electronically limited 155 mph. ‘Ring time comes in at a hair over 7 minutes 50 seconds.

PERFORMANCE: No question, the new-comer Italian monsters the M3.

BMW M3: 0


INTERIOR: Here’s where things start to fall apart for the Giulia. The interior itself seems well resolved, but early reports of crashing infotainment systems and some false-positive warning lights don’t bode well. Here’s hoping Alfa Romeo can iron all this out once production ramps up.

INTERIOR: You can always rely on BMW for a quality interior and the M3 is no exception. Its driver focused interior and intuitive instrumentation are equally accommodating for both track days and long journeys.
