The AMG Hypercar That Doesn’t Exist (Yet) is Almost Sold Out…

Remember that Mercedes-AMG hypercar, the one with the heart of a Formula-1 car? Yea, well, it’s nearly sold out…

Even though the $2 million, 1,000 hp ballistic mid-ship is still 2 years away from arriving the list of interested parties is quickly approaching AMG’s 200 to 300 car quota, Mercedes-AMG Chairman Tobias Moers told Autonews at the 2016 LA Auto Show.

“It’s close to our production capacity,” Moers said. “It’s an amazing car. There’s nothing else on the market.”

Moers also confirmed several juicy details about the hypercar’s powertrain: Aside from a modified idle-speed and a reduced compression ratio for street use, it will use the same 1.6-liter V6 hybrid system Mercedes-AMG’s championship winning Formula-1 cars–and it will still rev to more than 10,000 RPM.

“If you combine both worlds, the most efficient powertrain on the planet, which is the F1 powertrain, with the competencies and capabilities from AMG, to make a very performing hypercar, this is the pinnacle of engineering in automotive now,” Moers said. “It’s a birthday present.”

Mercedes will pull the sheet on the as-yet-to-be-named hypercar in 2017 as part of AMG’s 50th birthday bash.
