Now that we know what’s coming this summer from luxury car company Maserati – the Levante SUV – what do they have in store for us in the future? Back in May 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne announced Maserati would redesign the GranTurismo, as well as launching a completely new sports car model based on an Alfieri concept car.
Maserati engineer Davide Danesin recently confirmed those past plans for the end of 2018, along with some extra spicy details. One upcoming innovation revealed is a new platform in development, with similar elements to the Ghibli, Levante and Quattroporte.
“Today the architecture is shared between Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante,” says Danesin. “With the Alfieri we think we need to make another step on the architecture so we’re going to arrive at another more sporty architecture, with some common basis [with Ghibli] but with development from there.”Rumors are swirling that the GranTurismo will come sometime in 2017, followed by the Alfieri the year after. The two performance cars will be similar featuring the same redesigned platform, though the GranTurismo won’t come in a convertible version.
To differentiate between the two models further, it’s likely the GranTurismo will grow in size and become a proper grand tourer. The Alfieri will stick to its sports car roots, similar to a Porsche 911 in potency. The GranTurismo will only be offered with V8’s, while the Alfieri will exclusively feature V6 engines.
