Nostalgic and refined, the presence of finely polished hardwood is one of the few design elements that has stood the test of time. Whether it’s in a home, a car or even a boat, a beautiful wood finish is the mark of true craftsmanship.

Gray Design is a company that believes in craftsmanship, and even if you’ve never heard of Gray, you owe it to yourself to check out their upcoming Hydra collection. Woodgrain is just the beginning — the three vehicles that make up the collection are anything but old-fashioned. Entirely electrically powered, this trio made up of car, hydrofoil and motorcycle offer impressive sophistication.

Timeless Design

The Gray Design slogan is “redefining tradition,” and you can see it embodied in the 3D renderings of their three-piece vehicle set . Each vehicle features stunning, flowing lines that call up thoughts of vintage British roadsters and modern European exotics all at once. The design language is consistent throughout the lineup.

Generous helpings of what looks to be very high-quality wood are applied to the top of all three designs. The wood panels are met by what appears to be metal or carbon fiber, which gives strong contrast to the warm wood color when rendered in the graphite tone used in the demonstration video.

Not Just for Show

Gray’s works of art aren’t just for admiring from afar, though. These are meant to be driven . Each one features all-electric power, and enough of it to compete with the most sought-after specimens available in the sporting world.

For the Hydra convertible, that’s 450 horsepower, while the low-drag Hydrafoil gets 100 horses and a top speed of 40 knots. Specs for the Hydros two-wheeler are, as of yet, undisclosed, but it uses a powertrain taken from the ZERO line of motorcycles.
Each of the concepts features what appears to be state-of-the industry electronics onboard. The Hydrafoil even appears to feature a display for passengers, to allow them to observe the boat’s speed and potentially other data on an LED screen mounted aft of the captain’s chair.

It will undoubtedly take some time for the Hydra series to make it to market, but we hope they do. This combination of beauty and functionality doesn’t come along every day.
