Let’s be honest. The X3 is a howling meh of a car, but give its diesel motor not one, not two, not three, but four turbos and slap some Alpina badges on it, and suddenly things start to look a lot more interesting.
The Alpina XD3 features BMW’s straight-six diesel, paired to an aforementioned four turbochargers, that help it to churn out 388 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. I’m getting shivers.
Alpina has also fitted electronically adjustable dampers, an equally electronically controlled limited slip diff, and has messed with the 8-speed transmission.
All of which is good for a 60-sprint of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 165 mph.
As you’d expect, Alpina also shod the XD3 in 20-inch be- as well as multi-spoke rims (you can get 22s optionally) and a slate of luxurious interior features.
Weirdly, Alpina is sticking it to England by not offering the full-fat XD3 in right-hand drive. Instead, Brits will have to settle for only two turbos and just 330 hp.
Order books open in the second quarter of 2018, though prices haven’t been mentioned yet.
