i don't necessarily listen to all that a brand, blog, designer or whoever says, but if the majority says that etc. this year floral is hot then I take it in consideration. Don't get me wrong, you don't have to go like an idiot following whatever they say, but you have to have some guidelines. Some people are good in math, some in sports and some in fashion. That is the cool thing about the world, we cannot live without each other so when someone is into something (and is good in it) it's better to take advice than to go with green zipper ralph lauren vest (nhf). Not saying that I'm good at it, but surely you can check out blogs and instagram. GQ and other stuff are sponsored so I can take a crap on my t-shirt and put it into GQ, if I had money to pay for it.

You can check these guys on youtube:

alphamconsulting (cool suggestions, sometimes not my style but good overall)

chestersee (he is musician but he is almost always dressed perfectly)

Mensskincarewithross (this guy knows all about skin care, sometimes he gets a bit too deep into self-tanning and stuff, but lots of usefull daily skin-care advices)

mhrrasmus (he is a hairstylist, he's quite modern, but you don't need to go to extremes with getting a haircut like his, just a guideline)

sixpackshortcuts (this guy sells his tapes but if you can just try some of his workouts that he posted, you will be amazed)

no, I'm not gay, and noone sponsored me, those are just some guys from my youtube sub.

+1 because you beat me to it!
It doesn't always have to be your GF though. Even when I'm not shopping with my GF, I still like to bring girls that I'm friends with. I became friends with a lot of the Nordstrom girl sales reps too (they even get me deals up to 50% off). Girls with style know what looks good and fits right. Also, it never hurts to have a second opinion.

The only guy I really take fashion advice from is my tailor, he's A1.

I buy Vogue from time to time just to admire the photography--including the ads.

I work with a lot of performers, fashionistas, and choreographers, I think I'm a pretty well dressed guy based off of the fact that people always compliment how I look or what I wear.
So with that said the best advice I could give you is, buy clothes YOU like, YOU feel comfortable in, and clothes that fit YOU.
If you feel good, you look good. Some styles fit different people better than others, but if you fallow those 3 things I'm sure you will look yourself in the mirror and think " man, I look good!"
    Good luck!
