rumormill: Lexus LF-A to cost as high as $225k

I would like to think this is only speculation, but who knows.

Edmunds Inside Line

PASADENA, California — After three auto show appearances and the occasional spy photo and video from Germany's high-speed Nürburgring test circuit, it's no secret that the Lexus LF-A supercar concept is headed for production. With an estimated 500 horsepower coming from the LF-A's 5.0-liter V10, we didn't expect the Lexus to come cheap, but Inside Line has learned that the car will carry a price tag over $200,000.

Ben Mitchell, corporate product planning manager for Lexus, confirmed that the price of the carbon-fiber supercar "will begin with a two." And another Lexus source in Japan told Inside Line the price may be as high as $225,000.

Shown in both coupe and roadster forms, the LF-A will first launch as a coupe. Roadster versions will be priced even higher. Both body styles are approximately 2 inches shorter and an inch narrower than the 483-hp Ferrari F430, with a similarly sized wheelbase. A 2007 Ferrari F430 Spider costs $211,525.

Although final specifications have not yet been released, Lexus says the LF-A will reach a top speed over 200 mph.

What this means to you: Lexus is gunning for the Italians with the LF-A, and it's not going to cut any corners in its quest to deliver a legitimate supercar. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor

Funny you should post this. I was speaking to my friend back home who is the Son of the Toyota Dealer in Bahrain, and we were having a chat about a possible purchase of LX570 or a Diesel Land Cruiser and the LF-A was mentioned he said that the cost will be high and a 200-220k was the price being talked about. He jokingly said who would pay for it. My answer to him was I would:yup: as I think the car will be very well made :driving:

I'm sure it will be a well conceived supercar, but the target demo will suffer from sticker shock if they price it above the 430 IMO. They should lose a few bux selling the coupe, let the enthusiasts hype it up (if it deserves the street cred) and they'll make a killing on when they release the spider, not to mention keep resale from tanking.

obviously, the performance will be there but will it have the intangibles? the feel and sound of an exotic? a very curious car...

considering how shitty my "fine german engineering" reliability has been, i'd have no problem spending that much on a toyota (if i could justify spending $200k on a new car.)

996tt - and i'm not even talking about mods - i'm talking about things that should just work for the lifetime of a car (like, say, the door locks, the gas filler tube, the gas gauge, the ECU, and various other retarded ill-fated engineering decisions made by the germans.)

i love my car but, despite being a pretty quiet and calm person, i could rant on the design faults of the 996tt for a day or two.

I think its hit or miss with these 996TT's, I've encountered a ton of them that were absolutely perfect, and a dream with out issues, and then others that have been having a ton of miscellaneous issues.

I have to agree with you, (if I had the means), then I wouldn't mind purchasing the LF-A if I knew it'd be the perfect reliable super car.

As an enthusiast, I would buy the F430 over the Lexus all day long. But I can see wealthy, middle-age, baby-boomer types preferring the lexus over the loud, uncomfortable, unreliable and expensive to service ferrari instead.

I would think this Lexus would be expensive to maintain as well. I am seeing unconfirmed reports of the GT-R costing as much as $10-20k per annum, for mandatory service and maintenance.. and that car is ~$80k

$225K for a glorified Toyota? I don't think so. They'll get the first batch of suckers but beyond that it's gonna go the way of the VW Phaeton. Great car, great execution, but priced out of their target audiences range.

Lexus, Nissan, all these companies coming out with a "supercar" will just never be able to match the feelings you get from having/driving a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Porsche. Yes the latter 3 have their faults, but nothing can replace the range of emotions that those 3 offer when you take them for a drive.

have you driven one yet?

So quick to dismiss the Japanese cars. Make no mistake, the landscape has changed. Japanese sports cars are on the rise. They are making them faster, cheaper and more reliable. So may still talk of soul-less animals, but beware. In ten years, the car scene will be very different. The Germans and the Italians better keep up. The Japanese have single handedly taken down the American manufacturers. They now have their sights dead set elsewhere.
