Thread: California trip from SF to SD

Hi,
I'll be in California from April 17th to May 2nd.
Any recommandations for good places to eat (casual and cool, not too fancy...and no French cuisine), cars and coffee or other car related meet that worth to be seen, bars...
Here's thet different place we will stay at:

SF
Carmel
SLO
Venice beach
San Diego
Huntington Beach

I assume you will be driving from San Fransisco. I don't have any recommendations for S.F. However in Carmel a good place to eat is the Flying Fish restaurant. On your way down the coast you will go through Big Sur. Stop at Nepenthe. Nepenthe Restaurant, Big Sur, California. Burgers, salads and good soup. Killer view of the ocean. Try to get there at 11:30 in the morning or you will have to wait a bit. Hearst Castle is on the way from there in San Simeon. Once in SLO, there are three restaurants that I would recommend. Koberl at Blue, Buona Travola, and Guiseppe's.
My shop is in SLO. So if you want to come by there is always something going on. The World'd Fastest Indian motorcycle is here now and probably will be then.

SLO Town! I am from Atascadero. Lived up there for 11 years. Sometimes I miss it.
Also for Central Coast Check out Madonna inn, Morro Bay and Paso Robles for Wineries

Hey Phil, whats the name of your shop? I live in SLO and go to Cal Poly! When you come through SLO Speed-Haus, be sure to hit up Firestone Grill for a tri-tip sandwich, and Louisa's Place for breakfast!

When you are in San Diego check out Del Mar, La Jolla, the gaslamp district, that will be a great time to hit the beach too

Wow this is right up my alley. I too attended San Luis for college and have lived all over CA, including 4 of the above mentioned cities.

In San Luis, you can make a short trip NE to Paso Robles, home to the hottest wines yet to hit the market. If wine is your thing, try to get in at Saxum. Wine spectator 2010 #1 wine of the year. Saxum Vineyards

Justin Vineyards is also a well know, easier to access winery with a great little restaurant and beautiful property. They do have 4 suites available to stay in that are top notch.

Avila beach, about 10 mins south of SLO has very nice cliffside dining in any of the hotels, they are somewhat nicer that the digs in slo. Downtown San Luis has some amazing restaurants, and the nightlife is getting better with the influx of some smart college promoters (No more friday night kegger, welcome to the new slo). Best breakfast in San Luis is this little place called Splash Cafe.

As you cruise down the coast be sure to make a quick stop in Santa Barbara.

I cant say much for LA, there are so many hole in the wall places to top level establishments that are doing things right its hard to choose. Someone who is currently living in the area should be able to provide you with a list of places to check out.

When you hit HB, be sure to go downtown. It has been revitalized and expanded. It is that typical California surf image you see. For cheap eats, Harbor House or Shore House are great 24hr diners that have awesome food. I like the Dukes on the pier in downtown HB as the few cannot be beat come sunset time. There is a little burger place called Hot of the Grill that had really good food.

San Diego - My current home. What can I say, there is so much you wont be able to see it all in this one trip. Walrus is correct - Del Mar and La Jolla are the highest of the highend (yet filled with tourists this time of year) and Gaslamp area downtown has some of the hottest nightlife on the west coast. Depending on your likes, I can point you to a club or event or lounge or bar that will wrap up the trip perfectly. If you like exotic cars and art, stop by Symbolic in La Jolla to see their newest addition, the Symbolic Collection. Ferrari and Maserati of SD are right up the street too.

Head away from the coast for the best eateries though.

If you're in SD on the weekend, hit up a roof-top pool party.
