Default Tips for trip to Cairo, Egypt?

Have any of your guys been to Egypt before?

My wife has a conference for work that's going to be in Cairo during the last week of January. I think I'm going to tag along for the trip and do some sight-seeing while I'm there. I've never really looked into an Egypt trip though, so have no clue what to do outside of the Pyramids My wife will be working during the day at the conference for the most part, so I'm going to need to find things to do on my own during the daytime.

So, anyone visited before? What are all the can't miss things to do in Cairo? Obviously, I'm planning to go and see all the pyramids, sphinx, and the like. I know there are a few awesome Mosques and buildings to check out. I'd love to do some Scuba diving in the Red Sea, but I'm thinking that'll be too far to go for a day trip. I'm pretty big into photography, so I'll probably spend a lot of my free time taking pictures.

Any tips for good places to visit, places to eat, regular events to watch?

With the hotel and most of our meals covered by her per diem, it's seems like a great chance to check out somewhere new Thanks guys!

I'll definitely add the museum onto my list. They must have some interesting stuff there with all the ancient egyptian history.

I'm looking forward to trying some of the local foods and markets. Did you get sick from the food any or is it generally pretty safe to eat? I'm assuming it'll be a lot of flat breads, hummus, and spicy foods - can't wait.

    DONT DRINK THE WATER.

I watched bizzare foods with andrew zimmern when he was there lol. He refused the water when he was walking around the markets.

Egypt is great, very innexpensive too. A lot of people i know vacation there.

Yeah, I pretty much avoid drinking the local water anywhere outside of the US, unless it's like Canada.

Good idea about Andrew Zimmerman - I'll have to see if I can find that episode with him, and I'll also look up Anthony Bordain episodes from Egypt; that man has my dream job...

Thanks for the ideas thus far!

haha same. Just wander down alleys and talk to people. They always wanted to take me places so we just said fvck it and went random places with people and drank tea and stuff. Super fun.
