Hmm, I'm not a real stickler on having to do the traditional wine / food pairings but if you're not a regular wine drinker it's a lot easier if you stick to them... So, in this case I'll disagree, the Acacia is good, but it's really not a wine for big red meats. It will do well with salmon, pork, duck or maybe chicken or other fowl. It also might be just a tad acidic for casual wine drinkers.

OTOH, I do agree with your Syrah suggestion. I just happen to be drinking the 2005 Cline, Los Carneros, Syrah at the moment. You might still be able to find it at around $20. The more recent vintages will be cheaper but need time to open (like, lots of it, unfortunately). Once they do open, they'll have big fruit and some nice sweetness. Perhaps more a BBQ type wine but they'd certainly do well with most steak.

I'd also agree on the Clos De Bois Merlot suggestion. Probably around $16 depending on vintage. Initially a little more chalky on the palette
than some wines, but once it opens the fruit is good. It's a pretty easy wine to drink for most people and good with a lot of different types of food. If you're heading towards lamb or game it should do well and it will stand up to most steaks, except perhaps a pepper steak type stuff (don't think that's an issue with Argentinean food?) for which you might want a little more acidity.

Concha y Toro makes some great wines <$20. Chilean, not Argentinian, but close enough
