    Default Wine Recommendation Needed

    Hello Gents

I am a complete neophyte when it comes to wine.

My partner of 10 years is retiring and he is a wine expert.

I would like to get him the best of the best. A case of the stuff.

    Can someone give me suggestions?

    Thanks.

That was quick! I was going to ask if you had a price range in mind, guess you did... :-)

I know nothing about wine, but my father would order a brand called B. R. Cohn by the case, he had several cases. Opus One must me good also, he had several bottles of that, and a magnum i think he called it, it was a huge bottle that was probably 6 inches wide at the bottom. My step mom opened it when he passed away, no it was not celebratory (i hope), he said that we must drink it that day if he passed before he was able to drink it.

Stags Leap, Penfolds, Silver Oak, Dominus, Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, Heitz, Caymus, Martha's Vinyard, Screaming Eagle, ...those are a few i remember that he would drink a lot of, they must be good...spellings might be off.

best of the best? a case of 61 Romanee Conti - might even get a deal on it during these hard times, but probably not.

If you want to go all out, pick up a bottle of Screaming Eagle.

If you want to go DEEP into wine nerddom as for "best of the best":

    1947 Cheval Blanc
1931 Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Porto
1962 DRC RC or La Tache
Magnum of 1870 Chateau Lafite Rothschild from the Glamis Castle

But realistically, a case of Opus is nothing to sneeze at. I would've voted for the 2000 Margaux as a more realistic and somewhat readily available choice.

If I had hit here in time I would have gone the other way with my recommendation: the 2005 Columbia Crest Reserve: $30 / per bottle, 95 points from the wine spectator. It's just one absolutely amazing wine for the price, and personally I'd consider it better than anything mentioned in this thread so far, regardless of price. This is the kind of wine that often doesn't catch the attention of a serious wine person simply because many people tend to look on Columbia Crest with a bit of snobby disdain. However, let someone who is serious about wine take one taste and they'll be thanking you forever for it...
