    Default G55 winter tires

    Hi guys,

What's your call between the 3 following winter tires. It's for a 2010 MB G55. Factory size tires are 275-55-19.

I live in Montreal: heavy, long and harsh winter. I am gearing towards the Blizzak.

    - Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow (running at size 265-55-19)

    - Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1 (running at size 255-60-19)

    - Toyo Open Country G-02 plus (running factory size at 275-55-19)

    Any recommendation and why?

    Thanks

once you go blizzak, you never go back. they are by far the best set of snow rubber you can buy, they just don't like dry roads much since they burn up quicker then other sets.

Are the stock tires not any good in the winter? That is disappointing....

I run Toyo Open Country A/T and they are great in the winter time.

No, I am sure the G will be just perfect in the winter with stock tires. It's just to add so more traction.

Don't you have to run winter tires in Quebec by law?

I am going to be running the Pirelli Scorpions on our X5 as they come in an RFT and its my wife's car and dont want her to have to deal with a flat.

    Yes, winter tires are mandatory.

ride quality is somewhat softer, the tread compound is notably softer then the pirelli scorpion a/s tires that I run the remaining 3 seasons. you will continue driving a cushy truck, this won't change.

cornering grip is certainly compromised but this is an SUV that I drive (Cadillac Escalade EXT) and I'm not looking to go drifting in the thing.

noise at first is quiet but as the tire wears, you'll notice a bit of extra noise sneaking into the cabin.

the wife's Audi Allroad also rides on blizzaks as I would spare no expense in her or my son's safety.

bottom line, these are snow tires, you will get home with these tires, you will not go racing around with them. that's what they are made for, that's what I use them for.

the BMW also sits on snows but I rarely ever drive it when the roads are wet, let alone snow covered.

I should add that Blizzaks are probably the best ICE tire that you'll ever buy (given today's market), running around on an ice-rink with these tires or just a black ice covered parking lot is no longer a scary situation.
