Default Rolex Submariner - Go with the new Ceramic? vintage? other recent models?

So I have had my eyes set on the Submariner ever since a good friend of mine had shown me pictures of Sean Connery as James Bond, wearing a Submariner. It just seems like a watch you can wear everyday, with whatever ensemble I choose. Whether in a suit or dressed casual, the Submariner seems to go with everything. Recently, I think a year or two ago, the model was updated with a ceramic bezel. I know some people said they didn't like it, and stated they'd rather opt for the previous models. Any particular reasoning behind this? I'm set on the ceramic, but am also purchasing one for my brother-in-law and want to get him the right one. He's a traditional purist and very picky about what he wears. His everyday is a Vacheron Constantin Malte Tonneau Dual Time and I wanted to get him something he could bang around without worrying about his watch. Any thoughts from the Rolex dudes out there? I know the Red models are sought after and are considerably more expensive, but what other models of the Sub should i be looking at?

edit: Forgot to add that I am looking for the steel version w/ the black face and bezel.

I would go (and I did) with the new ceramic versions.
    - The updates to the watch are too big to ignore. And IMHO, all the updates are great.
    - The maxi case makes the watch feel slightly bigger, which is a plus if you are used to larger watches.
    - The new and improved bracelet/clasp are a major improvement over the previous one, just handle both and you'll know what I am talking about.
    - The glidelock system on the Subs is insanely genious and assures you a perfect fit.
    - Love the ceramic bezel, scratch-resistant and it gives the watch a special shine.

    Go ceramic.

I have owned the previous sub model 16610 & 16613.

Personally, I really enjoy the newest ceramic models and new case..

thsiao pretty much nailed it. If you're debating between the two, just go with the Sub-C.

My daily is a no-date early 14060 on a James Bond NATO I got from Corvus watch.

My first real watch was a black dial w/date sub that was a H.S. Graduation gift, 23 years ago. I wore that thing for at least 15 years straight, including when I was framing houses/apartments, took tons of abuse, and never skipped a beat. Still running strong, one of the best watches ever.

I'd consider the previous model for your brother in law since he's a purist. For you, I'd go ceramic for the reasons hay Thsiao listed. I've seen some selling on the forums under 7k finally.
