Never owned a Watch. Help Please!
I have never worn a watch and if I have, it was so long ago that I don’t remember. To be honest with you I can’t recall ever owning one either. Maybe as a kid but I couldn’t tell you. So I am going to purchase me a watch for the #1 reason for having one, image.
Now I have been looking at the Movado series 800 in orange model 2600041. Below is a link to it. I really like the feel, the look, and the price. My plan is to stay under $2k being that I might not like wearing the thing. So, since everyone here pretty much has a nice watch I was wondering if I could get some advice.
Is this a good starter watch? Should I be looking at another brand for the same price range? Has anyone here owned a Movado and has remarks?
Thanks for any help!

In the $2K range, also look at Tag or Omega.

movado will not give you a good "image" maybe to those who know nothing about watches.. but to someone who has a clue.. they will know it is from a cheap jewelry store..
if your just going for image.. buy a rolex datejust, much cheaper than you would think and everyone who is just looking for "image" will be like "he's got a rolex on" and women will want to be with you.
rolex is nice in the sense they have a very robust and proven movement and the steel is 904L which is very corrosion resistant, but please dont be the guy who is like "my rolex is the best watch ever made" although it does have a proven movement and great steel case it is still a sub 5k steel watch.. realize that some brands make 60-100k watches in steel.
goodluck, and please dont buy a movado..
i would also suggest an omega or at least a breitling (of course nicer ones are over 2k, but you can negotiate a discount and get back where you want to be)
just as a last word of advice, you said "everyone here has a nice watch" please take into account most people that have VERY nice watches do not do it for image, but self pleasure.. as when your wearing a forged carbon watch costing 40k.. i guarantee you noone in the world besides maybe a VERY slim few even have a clue what your wearing.. even stores that sell the brand sometimes give you the "whats that cheap plastic watch your wearing" because we wear them for the love of the watches, and not for the image..Last edited by rijowysock; 07-23-2008 at 03:14 PM.

I would stay away from movado personally...too many inexpensive models definately look to tag or omega...if you want something less expensive but still a bit more exclusive look at Longines, or possibly Tissot

tissot can be cheap, if your looking for something that would be the "best bang for the buck" also look at seiko/citizen as they are decent pieces for the price (under 500)... just dont pick a model with "gold" on it as after a short while it will not be "gold" anymore...
also a key factor in buying a nice under 500$ watch (seiko/citizen), is look at the backs of the links on the bracelet.. if they are solid=decent watch.. if they are folded (one flat piece bent to make a link) dont buy that model as thats cheap.. theirs quite a few model citizen/seiko with solid links and solid end links (the link attaching bracelet to the case)

Thank you Rijoysok - I agree 100% with you on the Movado. There are a great number of very nice watches that can be had for the $2k and under range. I would look at a pre owned Rolex, Breitling, Omega, etc. I personally am not a fan of Tag, they make some nice watches in the upper ranges, however they also make a lot of quartz powered "fashion" watches as well. I personally think that it dilutes the brand. Omega and Rolex are both well respected and nice pieces that will hold their look over time. Accutron is also a nice brand, well made, good movements at exceptionally good prices. Fit and feel of a 5k watch for sub 2k.

I'm looking to spend $1500 to $2000 for a decent watch for this price range. No less but maybe more. Thanks for the help.

I would agree with what Riley said. If it solely for image, just get a used Rolex and then be prepared for people to ask you if it is real.
If you want something unique, that is a different story. My Welder gets more comments than my Panerai does. No one would ever argue a Welder is even in the same time zone as the Pam. So if you want movement, that is one thing, but image is another.
There is a thread a few pages back about watches under 1k with a ton of great options. I would check out some of the more popular watch forums like watchuseek.com or timezone.com and look through their classifieds. There are a ton of watches in your price range besides Movado.Scotchy, Scotch, Scotch...I love Scotch

used breitling steelfish xplus
used possibly stolen rolex datejust from a pawn shop (not reccomended)
used tag heuer monaco or other nicer auto piece
used omega speedmaster
used omega seamaster
i would suggest the breitling, with a good discount you could find this model new under 2k.. msrp i think is like 2720 or something on bracelet, less on strap.
if your somewhere and you cant afford what you want, dont settle and get something you dont want thats less.. just take time and save up.
if your just looking for looks, maybe just buy a bracelet for under 2k... as you dont even want a watch anyways.. your just trying to add image..
ill tell you one thing, ive bought some VERY expensive items in my time.. and i always wear a very nice timepiece.. but i have never once bought something from someone just because they wore a nice watch.. or never once judged someone on wearing a piece of crap/not wearing a watch unless they tried to pretend it was something it was not..
im guessing you are in a sales position and trying to put off an image to get people to have a greater tendency to buy? (i only say this because i have a few people i know who are in used car sales and they are always like "yo i gotta get me a rolex so people will buy stuff from me" and i always reply.. give them great information and dont act phony and they will buy...
again i dont know everything, but simply buying a watch for IMAGE is not really a cool thing.. most people that buy for image are the same people that try and show their stuff off and pretend its more than it is.. its funny that when you go to the mall and visit a jewelry store and sit back.. the gentleman that walks in with the fake rolex or fake other watch is the first to tell the sales lady "yeah look at my gangsta watch ho" or "this shit be 5k you nappy headed ho, lemme see that iced shit u got there" (only looking for image/trying to appear wealthy) whereas the gentleman that walks in with the 450k minute repeater simply casually asks about the watch in the display and if he removes his.. he simply sets it down and doesnt say anything about it..
so like i said, if your only looking for an image, maybe find something else that YOU enjoy that you could add to ensemble that would add image.. maybe some nice loafers, nicer slacks, etc etc etc.. but i wouldnt suggest buying a watch for the simple reason of adding a nicer image... i mean look at OJ simpson... gold watch all those years, turned out to be a fake watch...
