I'd say you see both scenarios commonly, but it adversely affects the pricing. If you plan to resell in the future (even if its a small chance), I'd buy from a reputable dealer with box and papers. Unless you are well connected in the gray market, it will be near impossible to sell a piece without it being complete. If you plan on keeping, get it for a song and beat the shit out of it. My 2 cents.
