Nextengine desktop 3D laser scanner. Creates multi-layer renderings of anything with depth to it. A friend of mine is using this to make templates of old Willy's parts, but software allows for digital editing/scaling/etc. Useless unless you have somewhere to send digital files to be converted for machinist to stamp/tool out parts as needed.

my friend works for a company here in Quebec that made a special hand device that allows you to scan surfaces and automatically renders them to your computer, it precise to a tenth of a micron if I remember. That way you can instantly render everything you want, no limitation on size what so ever.

These are great! What really interests me though, is the 3D printer! I've been looking for one locally, to make a product I've drawn up.

Depending on the material you want to print DIY models exist. MakerBot is the first that comes to mind, also numerous websites will allow you to submit drawings, pay for the product and they will ship you the print.

Plastic would be fine for prototype model, for fit and finished results. The selling product will be metal of some type.
