1971 VW Squareback Project
I bought this a little over 2 months ago now and I couldn't be happier. Here is the background on the Squareback.
Wife and I needed a second car, since her Mazda was on it's 3rd tranny and it was time to dump it and we needed a car that was better on gas than the E500. So I started searching craigslist and searched all autos from $0 up. As I was going through I found a matte pink Squareback selling for $900, 68 I think, and she thought it was the cutest thing ever! She wanted it so bad so that she could put it in front of her Bakery/Cupcake store once we get the money to open one up for her.
So, I start doing research into the background of the Type 3 VWs and learning that they are so darn easy to work on, I agreed that it would be fine to get it and I would work on it to get it running again, as the ad said it wasn't currently running but did run earlier that month. Along with the lack of it running, it was missing most of the entire interior. So, I email the guy asking about it and waited for a response. About a week later, I realize that I never got a response and I went back on CL to see if it was still on there. It wasn't.
Another week goes by and looking at all the info about Squarebacks and Type 3's and signing up on a bunch of T3 forums for info, I was determined to get one for her so we can have it for mobile advertising for her future bakery. I start searching all over another one that I can try and convince her into. She kept saying "maybe its a sign that we shouldn't get one." I wasn't about to let her be right, not when I get this into a car. I can't just let it go.
As I'm looking around on CL some more for another one in the area, I found one about 40 miles away that was being sold for $1500. I emailed the guy instantly asking to buy it. He said that he had someone coming out to take a look at it in a couple days and that if I wanted it I would have to go get it that day. That's when I told my wife that I would be getting it and that she would have to come with me so I could drive it back home. I emailed him asking if he would be able to lower the price at all, just to see if I could get a better deal than I already would be. He said that the lowest he could go is $1000. Awesome! I said alright and I headed out to go get it and stopping by the bank to grab the cash I texted him telling him that I had just paid my rent, wondering if he could go any lower than that. He said not really but, he could go down to $950. I said deal and that I'd be there in about 35 min.
Showed up to his house and paid him for the Squareback as he was running around his garage finding a ton of extra parts for the car that he was throwing in with it. He said that he was moving to Hawaii and that he was just getting rid of everything that he owned to start over out there.
So, I now have my the Squareback and the wife drives the E500 until the Squareback is 100% reliable. Without further ado, here are the pics of my 1971 VW Squareback:

THose are nice little car that you can do many things with. Great!!! Can't wait to see the final result. A suqareback, hard to find in descent shape.
Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.
You see a mousetrap - I see free cheese and a f*$king challenge
