Default Altitude Sickness - A Denver Detomaso's Winter Waking

Here in Colorado most collector cars are put into hibernation for the winter. Many of them receive maintenance and upgrades during this
time as well. So begins this Pantera's winter garage fun. I am in the mock-up stage at this point and the pictures reflect that but things are moving rapidly. This project is taking my 408W Pantera to the next level with a pair of Garrett turbos, a nice intercooler, fuel injection many other associated fast goodies. As this was a racing engine to begin with, there are some engine changes that are being done to relieve the compression woes and so forth. The target power has yet to be determined but we will see what happens. I hope you enjoy the early stage pics!

I have seen 3 of these locally here in Oklahoma City that are so well maintained that you'd expect to see them as a 2000 car.

Looking forward to hearing more about this project!

Thanks guys! A little more on the car...

The car was used as a privateer race car in the 70's. The car was retired from racing and put away just outside of Vegas. Some friends of mine found out about it many years later and took it back to California. They had been selling parts off of it as it was more or less a parts car at that point. Knowing I was looking for one, they called me and I told them not to take any more parts off, I was coming to buy it and pick it up. This is what it looked like.Pantera_day_1.jpgP_Day_1.jpg
Needless to say I restored the entire car over the next nine years from the ground up. It has been fully updated and highly modified. It has fully adjustable chassis stiffening and suspension and on and on. Everything is rebuilt and upgraded. There is way too much to list. The engine is a 408 Windsor stroker built by Madcap Racing Engines in Colorado. The engine with a carb made 587 on the dyno but also had 11.1:1 compression that was not going to work with the turbos. The engine has fully forged internals and is a hydraulic roller motor. I am going with a new set of heads with 72cc combustion chambers to drop compression to 9.5:1 using a standard .042 performance head gasket. The aluminum heads, altitude and intercooler along with some racing fuel should make the engine pretty happy with 9 - 12 lbs. We will see!
After showing the car for a couple of years, I think it is time to make a mean car meaner and enjoy it a bit!

That thing is going to be mean when it's finished. What size turbos?
Looking forward to see it finished this summer! You will have to bring it by Mancave..

A few more old pics along the way. The first one is a pic of some crossmember damage under the driver's floor. damage.jpgThis one shows the vintage Konis and a lot of work needing to be done. Pantera_rear.jpgOne more. small_Pantera_1.jpg

By contrast, here are some recent shots of the same car. The first one was taken by a good friend of mine Scott with Violet Mae Studios. Violet_Mae_Studios_Photoshoot2.jpg and one of the back. Backside.jpg One more headlights_HID.jpg

Colorado in here pretty deep...I better watch my step! ;-)

I agree...one of the best Panteras I have ever seen...and what an insane build! There are few down here that come be Cars & Coffee, not nearly as well sorted as yours.

How does the pantera compare with any modern supercars you have driven? I have always imagined it to be like a mid-engined Viper of sorts...
