Yeah, after researching the FMP, it seems like a good way to kick off the trip. I only plan on being in Koh Phangan for 2 nights, as soon as I land in Bangkok at noon on Aug 3rd I plan on heading straight to Koh Phangan and departing the island on the 5th. Might need to figure out an alternative solution to the 4-day booking.

My price range is not to exceed $250 a night, I am budgeting $1600 for hotels for the 18 days there, so if I spend $250 one night, I would have to stay in $50 hotels for a few nights to stay within the budget. I am mainly looking for hotels that are at least 4-Star or have a unique view or amenity and of course if a L4P member recommends a hotel from personal experience that is helpful.

Subscribing. I'm in the midst of planning trips in Thailand and Bali. Seems pretty fair to say that Bangkok and Phuket seem to be the places to go. I'll be Denpasar in Bali if anyone has information regarding that area.

    Default Diving

I am looking to do diving in Krabi and Phuket. Originally I wasn't planning on diving because I thought you had to be certified, however I am being told that you don't need to be in Thailand. If I did a a lesson in Krabi and then a dive in Phuket would that be a good idea, or should I have more experience to be diving? I have never dived before, but love sailing and swimming, so not afraid of the water.

Also does anyone recommend a resort in Phuket, if not a specific resort, which region or side of the peninsula is best, south, east, or west?

I've yet to dive but Koh Tao is supposedly the best. It's not far from Samui or Pha Ngan. It might be worth checking out.

I think you're looking for a program called "Discover Scuba" or "Resort Diver" programs; I know PADI offers this program, and I'm sure that NAUI and the other organizations offer it too. Typically it's a short course on diving - you'll spend a couple hours reviewing the basic gear and how it works, then they'll take to you a shallow reef where you can do some basic diving.

Thailand has tons of dive operators in the area, but my biggest advice would be to get recommendations first or to look for a PADI 5-star rated shop. I've gone diving in the Caribbean before with some pretty shady places, and I'd hate for you to learn from someone that's gonna give you bad info when learning.

Another option is to actually take a certification course locally, then you can do your check-out dives for Open Water Certification at one of the resorts. Basically you take care of all the classroom and paperwork portions at home or in a pool, then you do a few dives with an instructor while on vacation to get certified.

If you've never gone diving before - I definitely recommend it. It's by far one of the coolest things I've done, and I try to go every chance I get at a tropical location. It also never expires and is useable worldwide. Diving is probably one of the things I'm most excited about for my trip to Thailand.

We stayed in the Lebua State Tower 5 nights in Oct. We stayed in one of the tower club suites it was far from somethings but it is so easy to get around the city. We went down to several bars in Soi Cowboy, saw the the reclining budha, China town, etc.

We spent some time in Chiang Mai, and stayed at the Le Merdian it was adequate, but the Lebua was nicer. We rode the elephants at the Thai Elephant Home which is one of the ones that let you sit on the elephant instead of in a basket. Definately bring a change of clothes it you do this.

We also did the Tiger Kingdom which lets you visit with tigers of varying ages in the cages, We went through all the cages including the baby tigers and that was very enjoyable.

The Night Safari was highly recommened however honestly I was not impressed.

We flew Air Asia in between I recommened get one of the front "upgraded" seats especially if you are over 5'8". It was kind of a no frills airline but clean, and my husband said they had some of the hottest flight attendants he had ever seen.

It you want something a bit more upgraded try thai airways.

Please free to ask me anything you can think of

Never say, "I am not opposed to doing anything in Thailand"…be careful you don't end up in Pattaya's Boy's Town.

Screw all the nice expensive fully stuff, get down and dirty. Get a room on an upper floor above a GoGo so you don't have far to stumble with both your dates, or three or four. Back in the day, we got it down to a science….5 days on little over $600USD including lodging/plane tickets (flew from S. Korea). But then again, we were going there every 45-60 days.
