    Default New Orleans... Dangerous ?

    Hey guys n girls..

Just a quick question, thought i would get a pretty straight answer out of the L4P fam..

Thinking of doing a fly drive holdiay next year, thinking of Nashville - Memphis - Jackson - New Orleans then over to Austin or somewhere like that and flying back to the UK.

My girlfriend is a little nervous about going to Orleans, only cos you read some horror stories about holiday makers getting mugged or worse.. Does that actually happen there?
Also, do you think that sounds like a good 2-3week break ? Im really into my BBQ food and Blues, so thought that would be a great treat around that area.

    Cheers

I know around Mardi Gras, pick-pocketing can be a big risk you take. The other times of the year, I'm not so sure.

Dinoone is our resident New Orleans-ian. I'm sure he could give you some great tips on where to stay and what to do, and how to do all that safely.

New Orleans is a beautiful city with great food and culture. I've gone there every year since birth and commute there once a week now. Where do you want to visit? During the day you wont have any problem. In the night, if you don't know the city it can be really dangerous. Ares like the French Quarter and Bourbon at night should just be avoided IMO. You'll see street performers playing and you'll get all sucked into listening while their friend is pit pocketing you. There's a really Nice Italian Deli area in the Quarter called Central Grocery.. no tourists there whenever I go and order a Muffaletta. Even though Houstons is a chain, their burgers are amazing. There is one on St Charles Ave and I'd eat there. Acme Oyster House on Ibervilel st is fun but kinda touristy. I like to eat there. One of my favorite places is Byblos - greek food. On magazine street and pleasant pretty much. Just PM me what you want to do and I could help you out more.

Excuse my spelling. Not really caring today.

I go to a lot of college bars. The Boot, Rocco's Tavern ect.. nothing good there. Just older guys date raping girls.

New Orleanian here. Just like they said the FQ is pretty touristy. The main thing you need to do is constantly be aware of your surroundings. Who is around you, what is around you. When you are ready, get with Dino and I and we could help you out with where to stay and areas to avoid. i wouldn't totally avoid the city it is really fun. I wouldn't be any more scared in NOLA than I would in any large American city.

Thanks for input guys.. I really dont know what areas i want to visit yet but New Orleans just seems to appeal to me. Im sure its just as danergous as London if you go to the wrong area. Any city is i guess.

I will no doubt ask a lot more questions nearer the time of booking

I went to high school in New Orleans, the city is relatively safe if you stay out of bad parts and use your judgement, French Quarter is fine, a little to touristy personally, I would recommend Magazine Street for a lot of activity. PM me some expectations and information about yourself and I will give you suggestions on what to do/see/eat.

i live right across the lake in slidell about 45 min it is a safe fun place during the day but like mentioned if you don't no your way around at night it could be dangerous so all you have to do is stay out the bad places and just be mindful of things

I was in New Orleans some months ago.
Also walked through areas like french quarter and almost the whole canal street at night.
some areas were a little bit creepy, but I didn't feel like it was too dangerous...
