Montreal
This may have been covered before, but I couldnt find much on it. I am going to plan a trip to Montreal in a few months. My issue is I dont speak a word of French so I am a bit concerned with how difficult that will make things as communication may be problem. I have heard nightmare stories of people going to Paris and not speaking the language and getting treated bad as a result. I am curious if anyone has had any experiences with a language barrier problem in Montreal, and what could be expected for a non French speaker traveling there. Thanks!

language barrier is not a problem at all. I have been there numerous times, and even though i slightly speak french i only had to use it maybe twice. Most of the residents speak english. Be careful if you are out at night, my friends and I were mugged when we stepped off the main strip..
all you need to know are 3 beautiful words: St. Catherines Street.-

Sorry for you and your friends, happens very rarely here in montreal.
Laguage won't be a problem, everybody speaks english here (you can't compare Paris and Montreal). St-Catherines street is great for shopping and Crescent street is where all the restaurants are (perpendicular to st cath). Nightlife is either the old port OR St-Laurent street (All those streets are in walking distance)In AWD we trust

Many people leaving here don't even speak french. You shouldn't have any problem I would even say that it is easier if you don't speak french then if you don't speak any english. Don't worry about that and enjoy yout stay in our great town. The 3 streets already named are the ones to remember.
Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

I am with Marty on this one, as long as you are in the downtown montreal, not speaking french is the least of your problems. I'd say 90% of montreal is english. However if you were to come in Quebec city, people would understand you but would have a lot more problem communicating back to you.
