Spent 4 nights in Milan, it was okay. Spent 4 nights in Monte Carlo (Hotel de Paris) and it was life changing. With that said I vote MC.

I went to Italy last summer. It was absolutely awesome! You would have a lot of sight seeing to do in five days but I'm sure it would be a great trip. I would suggest Monaco too. I heard it is a little expensive, but definitely worth it. Let us know what you decide to do. If you go with Italy, I highly suggest visiting Lake Como. You can stay at Villa D'Este. It was beautiful! You can even get a boat to take you to cities around the lake. I don't suggest Rome since it reminded me of NY and I think other cities like Florence and Bellagio have more culture and more to offer. Hope this helps.

Keep in mind I was 15 (2005) at the time, so my opinions good or bad must be kept in context.
My dad was working with a company that hosted a retreat in MC and my family was invited to celebrate with them for a week, all accommodations paid for. My dad decided while we were in Europe we might was well do Milan the week prior to MC.
Milan could have been a good trip, and I will try to experience it again in the future. I hope my viewpoint doesn't negatively influence your perception of Milan because it is a cool city. I just enjoyed myself more in Monaco. Our bags got lost on a connecting flight, and the trip for me was just boring; nothing stands out for me other than their weird pizza and quirky graffiti. All that added up to a not-so-pleasant memory. If we could have done it over I think we would have chosen Venice over Milan.
When I arrived in MC it blew my mind, for two reasons. I was surrounded by more opulence than I knew existed - it was overkill. Then, as I am checking into my room at one of the grandest hotels in the world I cut the TV on and the levees in New Orleans were breaking. This was a confusing time in my life: how could this group of people have SO MUCH and others could have SO LITTLE! I felt sick to my stomach and at the time I could not make sense of everything. Once I got my head together I was able to enjoy the rest of the trip.
I took the tour of the royal families' castle (don't skip it), I walked by all of the luxury/ exotic car dealerships, shopped the mall, the convention center was cool (neat architecture), walked through the small shops (bought some cartoon figurines), had exquisite dinner at a couple places (french names and wasn't paying attention at the time) but one place was above the water, and at another a ballet performed for us the roof opened and fireworks went off... it was a helluva lot more fun than Milan. I can't remember it all but the exotics in front of the casino I will never forget.
I didn't go yachting or get into the casino but the next time I visit MC I will be rolling with the heavy hitters.Last edited by A106; 05-27-2010 at 01:52 AM.
