Default Washington DC suggestions needed

Hey guys,

I'm going to take a few days and head to DC in a 2 months for some R&R. What would you suggest doing and where should I stay? The main goal is to do some of the tourist things and see some history but I'm not sure what to put at the top of the list. Anything off the beaten path I should see or do? Any good places to eat that I can't miss?

Is DC a place where I can stay downtown and take cabs/subway to get around or do I need a car?

Thanks
Ryan

You dont need a car.. you can get around with just cabs and trains. the dc metro is pretty expansive.. i am leaving work now but i will write in more detail later.. what are you interested in? monuments? restaurants? nightlife? will you be coming alone? what is your type of scene?

The metro in DC is fantastic (I highly recommend it), you won't need a car. Also- the cabs don't have meters, they work in zones and charge a flat fee no matter where you are going.

-Stay at the Sofitel by the White House: http://www.sofitel.com/sofitel/fiche...he_hotel.shtml
-Go here if you like beer (most in the world): http://www.lovethebeer.com/brickskeller.html
-Check out the nightlife in Adams Morgan (if it's nice out, sit on the roof deck @ Reef)
-Check out the nightlife in Dupont Circle (Frontpage is fun)
-Walk around Georgetown (also check out the nightlife- I recommend Old Glory)
-Eat at La Ferme if you don't mind expensive (it's actually in Chevy Chase, MD- you will have to take a cab but it's totally worth it)
-Eat at Mi N Yu in Georgetown (you will also need to take a cab here- the metro doesn't go to Georgetown)
-Eat at 5 guys if you like good/cheap burgers
-Go do all the tourist stuff (the museums are all free)

Give me some time and i'll think of more.

Thanks guys,

My wife is heading to NY for the week and I'm planning on meeting my parents in DC for a few days. Nightlife stuff is out, so I'm looking for places to eat and off the path things to do. We'll visit all the museums and history places but that's about all I know of. Is there any 'If you are in DC you have to do this' activities that aren't as popular with the tourists?

-Check out the spy museum (not free): http://www.spymuseum.org/
-See a Nats game at the new baseball stadium (metro goes right to it)
-Tour the National Cathedral (my girlfriend sang in the choir there- very cool place with lots of history)
-Tour Embassy row
-Have lunch on The Mall
-Walk around/Eat in Bethesda (this is actually just across the border in Maryland, but it has a ton of great restaurants)

This might help you further: http://www.mustseewashingtondc.com/

s4zzle has given you a lot of good things to do and see while you are here in town. I work in DC and love this city. Try to see everything while you are here that has been said already but there are a few that I would suggest.

A must see is the Arlington cemetery and the grave of the Unknown Soldier. Try and stay around to watch the soldiers change guard, very mind blowing.

Next go to Great Falls. It’s a very beautiful place.

Not sure how much of a history buff you are but an hour or two away is George Washington's Birth place and Stratford Hall which are in Virginia.

Air and Space Museum is great.

Try some Maryland Blue crabs from the seafood wharf which are cooked to order if you've never had them before.

Check out where Lincoln got shot right up from Pennsylvania Ave.

Don't be afraid to ask the local people what would be nice to see and do.

Also three restaurants that are in the top 40 restaurants in the U.S. according to GAYOT.com that you may want to try are:

CityZen-Wash DC
Michel Richard Citronelle-Wash DC
The Inn at Little Washington-Wash, VA- Little bit of a drive.

Oh man. You just brought me back. All good suggestions. I'd also suggest the Ritz Carlton in Foggy Bottom. Used to live right across the street when they were building the damn place Very close to G-town, Dupont, monuments, DC Metro (right in front of the med school)
Brickskeller FTW!

I did DC last Feb. and had a blast. Stay at the Ritz Carlton Georgetown. From there you can walk all around Georgetown (my personal fav area in DC) and go to MANY awesome resteraunts in that area - oh and the shopping is top notch there as well.

Old Glory is a great spot - check that out for sure.

From M Street (main drag in Georgetown) you can catch the trolley tour (ask the concierge at the Ritz to hook it up) and that is 100% the best way to see the city. It runs all day so you get on, ride around and get off whenever you want. Go see what you want to see and when the next one comes around hop on and off to the next spot! Every place that everyone in this thread has mentioned can be seen from this tour. Highly recomend this.
