Default Paris Suggestions?

Going to Paris 11/13-11/16 as part of a little EuroTrip. We'll be staying at the George V but other than that have no plans. Can anyone suggest places for dinner? I was thinking we'd eat at La Cinq (which is in the George V) the first night since we probably won't feel like going anywhere. The Jules Verne (in the Eiffel) is already booked solid the entire month of November, so that's out. Any ideas?

what is your pain threshold?

Best meal in Paris: L'Arpege - he's a master of vegetables and slow-cooked meat - just ask them to cook for you. Price? Budget 300 euros/person before wine.

Best slightly experimental food: Pierre Gagnaire - has the potential to be the best meal in Paris, but it is a roller-coaster at times. 300 euros/person before wine.

Grandest, most exclusive experience of them all - food can be excellent: Ledoyen. Similar price point, can easily be higher.

If you like macaroons, Pierre Herme and Laduree are must-do's:

If you like chocolate, I'd suggest JP Hevin (ask for their cheese chocolates for something unique).

For casual, but excellent, food in that more traditional Paris brasserie experience, I'd suggest: L'Ami Jean or Racines.

you'll find foie gras on every menu in paris - that's a guarantee. whether you want to pay up to 100 euros for a dish of foie in the best restaurants is something you have to decide if this is your first time to Paris, and you like french food, you should be a very happy camper during the time you're there.

this is a friend of mine who lives in Paris - he likes the old way of eating, but he has lots of Paris restaurants (and he's probably more informed and pickier than me):
Julot: Ze Blog

my personal opinion: if money is no objects for one meal, try L'arpege or Gagnaire. if money is no object for 2 meals, try both for opposite ends of the haute spectrum. they are both generally acknowledged as two of the very best chefs in france, no matter who you ask.

Thanks for the suggestion to visit L'Arpege! It was very good; one of the courses was lobster, and I absolutely hate lobster. I ate the entire plate and enjoyed it thoroughly, never have I been so surprised by food. Everything else was of course very good, but I can't get over how something I usually will not eat was made so delicious.

that to me is the mark of a great restaurant - making you love something you hate

Default Le Precop

If you've never been, you have to try Le Precop, 13 rue de l'Ancienne Comédie.

Les Frères Blanc | Le Procope

They claim to be the oldest operating restaurant in the world, open since 1686. They still have many traditional dishes. Order the absinthe with your pre dinner drinks and make sure you try profiteroles for dessert!
