Knicks couldn't guard their shadows in a crucial playoff game. The only hope they have is that the salary cap doesn't get lowered too much, and they could somehow sign Chris Paul or Deron Willams in the 2012 offseason.

Chris Paul most likely - he wants in.

Not if he has to take way less money than he could get from another contender. When (not if) the salary cap gets lowered after the expected lockout and subsequent approval of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Knicks won't be able to offer him anything close to what the new "max" contract will be in 2012.

i do not disagree...BUT, these stars all have plenty of money already. they want championships as the great ones all have at least one under their belts. the knicks have a shot at it if they get a chris paul or similar. i guess time will tell...in the meantime, let's see if we can get a little run going in the first post season in far too long!

Paul hasn't been in the league long enough to give up tens of millions of dollars for a shot at a ring. Vets start thinking like that when they're nearing the 10 year mark or more. Lebron and CBosh gave a few million to team up with DWade, and their contracts are not that much lower on a per-season basis.

If the salary cap remains the same after the next CBA is negotiated, the Knicks would have $11.5M in cap room going into the summer of 2012. But it would be a miracle if the cap stayed at the current level. The lower the cap goes, the lower the amount that the Knicks could offer CP3 or Deron Williams or Dwight Howard. Would any of those guys give up $20M+ to play with STAT & Carmelo for 4 years, especially knowing that they'd be making less than half what those guys are making? I doubt it.

Only way that the Knicks might possibly add a 3rd star to the mix is if they could somehow flip Billups' expiring contract and Landry Fields in a trade, but that's highly unlikely. Oh yea, and Fields contract is up going into the summer of 2012, so whatever they sign him for further eats away at their cap space.

Hope for the best, but definitely expect the worst if you're a Knicks fan. There ain't a championship in your future unless a miracle occurs.

i know, i know, i know...but being a die hard fan forever, and watching 2/3's or so of each and every game since the early 90's (and you know how painful it got at times), i can not help but be positive. and, there is no way they give up fields...he is awesome and most importantly has heart - something rare in this day and age.
let's keep our fingers crossed for the salary cap miracle!
