Never thought of building one. Are you really saving the much?

I always thought getting a complete bike is cheaper. I'm not much of a component guy. Are they really important to consider?

a hybid in that budget IMHO is better off bought as-is...there are ways of building a better/lighter/faster bike, but itll cost ya, and its really honestly reserved for competition level bikes (road racers, downhill, xc racers)

ever tried out SCOTT bikes, they have great hybrids: http://www.scott-sports.com/us_en/category/8939/hybrid

I've been a diehard runner for the last ten years, but I'm about to start training for the MS 150 charity ride from Houston to Austin, TX (BP MS 150: April 16-17, 2011 : National MS Society). I have a lot of gear to stock up, but will hopefully have enough time to train during the two weeks a month I actually spend on dry land. I live in both Houston and Austin, which will provide me with very different terrain to train on.

Oh and the great people at BP are sponsoring the event

Let me know if you guys ever end up doing a bike run. I'd be down for that. These are my current bikes.

^^^ haha, they did cost a lot to build but I did it over time. I use to work for Marzocchi Suspension here in Valencia CA (where I live). That was ten years ago but i still get hooked up. The black Intense was my all mountain bike and the White Transition Blindside is my run $hit over / do anything bike. I even use it as a road bike on my local paseo. There's nothing like pedaling a 41lb full suspension bike with knobby tires up a 2 mile hill. If it doesn't kill me then it only makes me stronger.
